Container-loads of education

Now imagine just for one moment if this picture appeared in the paper under a National government...the primary teachers's union, the NZEI would be up in arms, the TV and the newspapers would be all over it, and everyone would be calling for the head of the Minister of Education.

Well, unless a miracle has happened while I've been offline this afternoon, we still have a Labour government. So how, in 2008, can we explain the picture here?

3News carried the story last night:

And the Press sheds more light today:

It's all due to zoning. The government, by way of the Ministry of Education, wants to control the numbers of children attending the school, and will impose an enrolment scheme it they think it's necessary. Which of course, is totally at odds with what the community wants. But since when did the government ever give the public credit for knowing anything?

The real irony though, looking at my post earlier in the day, is that the government will happily shell out more than $200m to build Mt Eden Mega (Big Is Good!) and keep those being accomodated at Her Majesty's pleasure comfortable, while children at Longbeach School near Ashburton sit in a shipping container - roll on November!
