Mt Eden Mega - big is good!

So, Corrections Minister Phil Goff is today going to announce the plan to build Mt Eden Mega. According to the NZ Herald, the new prison "will include plans to add as many as five new tower blocks - three new eight-storey towers and two six-storey towers - alongside existing prison buildings by 2014. It is expected the first stage will be in place by 2011." Here's the story:
Unsurprisingly, no cost estimate is given. I say "unsurprisingly", because recent experience suggests that Corrections has problems in managing cost over-runs in their building projects. I wonder too whether the budget will include such niceties as flat-screen TV's and underfloor heating.
Mt Eden is long overdue for replacement, but a mega-prison in the centre of the city, with views of Mt Eden, the city skyline and the harbour? I'm not convinced.
