Finding love in the provinces

PM of NZ, the blogger, not the PM notes that the metropolis of Dannevirke, birthplace of Joh Bieljke-Petersen has a new tourist attraction which goes by the name of Promiscuous Girlz. He also notes that local opponents have set up a vigil to shame the locals (and tourists) from entering said "house of ill repute".

The owner of this brave venture couldn't be happier with the level of publicity she's received - she's even had the TV cameras there - a storm in a D-cup maybe?

Good lord - imagine if they had that in the mid 60's when we used to travel from Central Hawkes Bay to play Rugby and Cricket in Dannevirke.

They would have made a fortune.

They may indeed pdm - and there used to be some wild men amongst the CHB/SHB fellas as well, although my memories don't go back quite as far as yours!

Well Inv2 perhaps we had better not go any further down that track.
Having said that a wild man I was not - too small at 5'6' and about 11 stone in those days. Still I did mark Ian McRae a couple of times when he was in his prime.

pdm - I wasn't suggesting that YOU were a wild man!

Ah, Ian McRae & Bill David eh. I went to the shield game at Napier in 1967 when the Magpies beat Manawatu 11-6. What a team that Bay team was in that era - Thimbleby, Tremain, BDM Furlong, Hepa Paewai (very underrated player) and Davis & McRae. Mind you, the green and whites had a handy side too - a young Bob`Burgess, Sam Strahan, a few Nesdales, Don McCaskie (with whom I played golf up at Apiti a few years ago).

And speaking of McRae - do you reckon he was ever quite the same player after the Danny Hearn crash-tackle on the 1967 tour. Hearn was brought out to New Zealand a couple of years after that, and he benefitted from a game in his honour between Palm Nth Boys' HS and Mt Albert Grammar - a school match that drew a crowd of 5000!

My two mates and I got a hell of a fright as we made our way to the ground that day. It was the very first challenge and we had dallied a little long at the Mayfair pub in Hastings - you could drink and drive in those days without much fear of being caught as you will recall.

There was a hell of a roar when we were about 50 yards from the gates and we thought the game had started early. But it was only the unveiling of Hawkeye and Hawkeye junior.

As I recall it was a very tight game and Manawatu were worthy challengers. I only missed two games in that era and had the pleasure of playing firstly for CHB sub union in 1967 and then in the Napier Hastings senior competition in 68 & 69. In those days rep players and All Blacks turned out for their clubs and sub unions so played with or against all of the squad at some stage.

I also worked with Aidan Thomas in 68 & 69 and also went to a few Bay team social events over the 3 seasons.

As you say McRae was affected by the Danny Hearn tackle but hard to say the extent (if any) that it affected his play. As I understand it they remain very good friends.
