Peters steps down

Breaking news on the Herald's website...more to come

Here's the first story...

Winston Peters has offered to stand down from his portfolios as Foreign and Racing Minister pending the Serious Fraud Office's investigation into donations to NZ First.

Helen Clark will take over Mr Peters' portfolios at Mr Peters request.

The first meeting between the SFO and Mr Peters will take place tomorrow morning, Helen Clark said in a statement released minutes ago.

It is the sensible thing for WP to do notwithstanding his rants this morning to the contrary.

He knew he would be sacked otherwise.

But he has asked Clark to take over his portfolios!! Even when he is up to his ears in shite, he calls the shots. He must know something that Clark doesn't want known. LAX maybe?

Well I cannot say I am surprised about that.

But what prospect of the SFO making a decision before HC calls the election anyway?

Of importance, WP obviously chose not to bother giving HC the concrete evidence of his innocence and vast conspiracy to take him down.

What a plonker.

I think he willregret that little drunken rant on Radio NZ this morning.

IV2, I like yourself, still think he has something on her.

She must be under real pressure - a normal missive in earlier times might have read 'I have stood down Winston...'.

Winston having been here before will have an ace stashed somewhere.

He is of the type that will take everyone down with him whilst attempting to come out the opposite end smelling of roses.

PM - this time I think smelling of roses might be stretching it a bit. There are so many accusations against him that something has to stick. For a man who has spent his entire political career accusing everyone else of corruption, only one accusation has to be proven to demonstrate his hypocrisy.

IV2,

We live hope something does indeed stick. Though I am sure he will keep us well entertained.
