Contest - Guess the diversion

Obviously the PM isn't going to want the attention of the nation focused on Owen Glenn's step into the corridors of power tomorrow. She's already being quoted on Newstalk ZB as saying that New Zealanders are "over" the NZ First funding row, and it makes sense that someone from Labour will pull a rabbit out of a hat in the next 24 hours to divert the eyes and ears of the nation.

So what's it going to be? A waterfront stadium for Auckland? No, they've already done that. Buying the railways? No, too late.

So come on Keeping Stock readers - make your prediction as to what the diversion is before it happens. No cash prizes sorry (or anonymous donations!), but there is the chance to earn bragging rights, and of course to have some Monday fun.

They haven't got much of our money left to bribe us with, and there are few sector groups which remain to bribe anyway so it won't be a positive announcement.

That means it will have to be negative: maybe they've found somone who knows someone who thinks s/he heard John Key swear on the golf course.

They may not have any money. But they have some debt.

Abolish student loans and introduce a universal tertiary student allowance.

That oughta get some attention.

Alternatively, HC might just call an election to avoid tomorrow's session.

The 'JK tape' that has been alluded to on Labours web site - the Stranded.org?

I don't know if the swearing-on-the-golf-course revelation would be quite enough HP (sheesh - even I swear on the golf course!!), but good try, and keep guessing!!

smtc - they've talked about the UTSA for a while, so maybe... and calling an election would be a definite head-turner!

Is there no-one we can declare war on?

Why are you guys looking for Labour to announce policy as a distrction. Why not just divert everyone with a bigger scandal?

Does anyone else suspect the hand of H2 behind Veitch making the Sunday headlines 3 weeks in a row. Is that too long a bow?

Perhaps Labour can dip into their scandal archives and throw some more dirt at someone else. STHey can use some of the stuff they have been saving for the election proper. Whoops!! Already tried that and failed!!

The Nats are pro-nuclear - done

Privae trusts are funding the Nats - done and now a very steep and slippery slope for labour

Secret agenda - again

More 'leaked' tapes

Sheesh - I'm running out of ideas.

The diversion will be a statement along the lines of

"John Key is corrupt. Liarbour can prove it, but as we are broke, we are moving under urgency that taxpayer funding be immediately provided to further investigate. A report will be provided, post-election, after due process."

Some flunky like Juli Clausen will race into the press gallery and announce that a threat has just been made on the PM's life. She won't bother to add that these threats from Adrian Mole, flasher of Kilbirnie, having been coming in the post every week for the last nine years...

I'm with showmethetaxcut.

A universal student allowance has to be high on the list of likely policies to be introduced during the election campaign. Bribing students and their families worked a treat last time, so why not do it again?

Another possibility is expanding ACC to cover sickness as well as accidents. This was rolled out as a n election promise by Geoffrey Palmer during his brief tenure as PM, and could yet come back from the dead.

I would like to think National have scoped out a list of likely Labour campaign promises and developed responses. Based on their campaigning skills to date, I'm not holding my breath.
