Liam Reid has today been sentenced to life imprisonment with a 26-year minimum parole period for the murder of deaf Christchurch woman Emma Agnew. In addition, Reid has been sentenced to preventive detention for raping Miss Agnew, and another attack nine days later where he left a woman in Dunedin for dead after raping her. Liam James Reid – described by the judge as "an evil and dangerous predator" – bowed and waved to the clapping crowd as he began one of New Zealand's longest terms for murder, rape and attempted murder.
Justice Lester Chisholm said Reid's arrogance was unbelievable. He imposed a minimum non-parole term of 26 years as well as preventive detention for the murder and rapes in Christchurch and Dunedin.
The gallery in the No 1 High Court at Christchurch was packed to see the sentencing of the man convicted of the rape and murder of deaf woman Emma Agnew, and the rape, sexual violation, attempted murder and robbery of a 21-year-old student in Dunedin.
Many of the audience were members of the deaf community and the sentencing session was interpreted for them with sign language.
The public gallery broke into applause as sentence was finally imposed. Reid, 36, shaven headed, tattooed and flanked by three prison officers, bowed to the crowd and then raised both arms in a kind of victory salute as he was led away.
In one sense, he has fulfilled his life's ambition. The medical reports prepared on him before sentencing say he wanted to be serial murderer and rapist.
Whilst Reid will be 62 before he can be considered for parole, Keeping Stock hopes and prays that he is never released.

This guy is the embodiment of the argument in favour of capital punishment. I hope he rots in there... it's just a pity it'll be at taxpayers' expense.
What made him evil to start with though? Abuse and neglect when he was little? Can someone like this change? Remorseless and cold, but still human, I guess.
Anon - the TV report tonight said that he used to talk about killing animals when he was a child because of the feelings of power it gave him - but reckoned that killing a human would be even better. Personally, I don't reckon change is possible in someone like that.
His cell should have a strong rope firmly attached to the ceiling...

Generally, I oppose capital punishment, but in this case, I'd make an exception.

The shame for the Liam Reids of this world is that the "how did he get to be was he is" question is now irrelevant. Liam Reid is what he is. And he should never ever see the light of day again. He is a monster. And always will be.
