Spend it like Beckham

We all knew that the failed David Beckham/LA Galaxy promotion in Auckland was doomed to failure, but a loss of $1.79 million? Sheesh, that's BAD!

And Auckland Regional Council CEO Peter Winder must be a master of understatement when he said:

"This is a very disappointing outcome and it has been a disaster for the ARC,"

Imitation may be the best form of flatery, but it seldom works.

Absolutely right LB - the Galaxy v Phoenix promotion was magic - who'd have thought that soccer was get a 35,000 crowd in New Zealand. It was professionally promoted, it was at the best sporting venue in NZ, and it was against a credible opposition. By comparison, the Auckland match was a pale imitation, promoted by a council at a crap venue and involved a team of has-beens and never-wasses. Little wonder it lost a truck-load of money.

'claimed that the loss would not hit ratepayers ... ring-fenced as a trading loss'

[insert beer ad here] Bollocks!

I heard Winder quoted by Larry Williams about the ring fencing PMofNz. I wonder if he has heard of the effects of compound interest which Edison said was `the greatest invention of all time'.

Great when it works for you - a killer when it is working against you.

I am pleased to live in Hawkes Bay and not in the greater Auckland area.

There must be something wrong with my feminine side anon, but Jason does nothing for me - neither does Beckham. I must be too straight!!

Our take on this ;

It was never going to work, for so many reasons.

Very good LB - I rated you a 4 - it would have been a 5 but for that dreadful picture of Beckham's missus - I nearly regurgitated my dinner!
