Touring Zimbabwe

The Herald reports this morning that John Key and his National government are highly likely to tell NZ Cricket not to tour Zimbabwe in July.

Whilst we at Keeping Stock (me, myself and I) would rather that politics and sport were kept seperate, Zimbabwe is our exception to the rule. Under no circumstances should New Zealand be contemplating a cricket tour to a country run by a madman such as Mugabe. And we have just heard Justin Vaughan, CEO of NZ Cricket telling the RadioSport audience that the Black Caps do not want to go, for a variety of reasons - cholera being one!

New Zealand Cricket faces stiff fines from the ICC if it abandons the tour off its own bat (pardon the cricketing pun), but will escape censure if the government forces the tour's cancellation. Zimbabwe is the last country with whom we should have sporting contacts right now, and we have no problem with the New Zealand government taking the same stance as its Australian and British counterparts.

No way should they go.

The ICC are a bunch of gin swilling dickheads.

"The ICC are a bunch of gin swilling dickheads."

I know that's a long-held perception pdm, but I venture to suggest that they probably now gravitate towards the finest single malts. The ICC has sold out to interests from the Indian sub-continent, based itself in Dubai, and lost its soul in the process.

ICC are no worse now than they have ever been.

Faint praise I know, but remember that the old gin-swilling ICC used to turn a blind eye to Australia playing us in one test before 1973.

Say what you like about this lot (with justification) but they don’t allow that kind of non-development to happen.

As for Zim, NZC finds itself in the unique position of wanting the government to intervene without being said to say it.

Vuaghan should shut up to the media, but be onto the blower to the Beehive demanding gummint intervention.

If NZ cricket does not want to go, then they should say so and not go. Accept the ICC discipline, and pay any fine from a public whip round.

The Government should understand it either loses favour or integrity.

It can regain favour.
