Masquerading as news

Did anyone else watch One News last night? Here's the "lead story"...

Yes, that's right folks. The state owned broadcaster's news executives decided that the most important story of the day, the lead item of the highest-rating news programme in New Zealand would be about the Wellington supermarket which insists that its staff speak only English, which, when we last checked, was one of New Zealand's official languages.

Little wonder that TVNZ is in deep financial doodoo's and having to lay off staff. We hope the news editor who made this decision has a current, up-to-date CV - they may well need it!

And the second story last night? A beat-up about a New Zealander unable to get a job as a fireman in Victoria because he is neither an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

TVNZ needs to take a long, hard look at itself. Tabloid journalism masquerading as news does not a news bulletin make.

UPDATE: Paul Henry has been onto this story this morning (the supermarket, not Keeping Stock slagging off TVNZ, unfortunately), and guess what - viewers giving feedback are overwhelmingly in support of Thorndon New World! Another TVNZ own goal?

A general paucity of ideas. If we wanted that as a benchmark, we'd all go to talk Radio. Anyway check this out - laters.

Paul henry talking about "boxers" was hilarious this am. Pity about the absence of news.

Also, Something to add to the Polar Bear list - the Human Rights commission!

S1 Pies - if you're talking about TVNZ's attitude towards news, and its contempt for its audience, it is indeed a joke - a particularly bad one!

oh i've been noticing tvnz's decline into tabloid journalism for some time now.

i was asking about the human rights commission being added to the polar bear list. i mean, i understand the righties are excited - but the human rights commission???

Fair enough $1 Pies - personally, I wouldn't support the abolition of the HRC, but I can understand that others might.

Which leads to another thing - in the item last night, they said that the HRC couldn't comment, as it might prejudice any investigation IF a complaint was laid. Later in the "news hour", Dallow, when doing the summary of the news said "A Wellington supermarket is under investigation ..." Now unless someone from the HRC had advised TVNZ that a complaint HAD been laid, that was patently untrue - unless of course Dallow meant that TVNZ was doing the investigation!
