Some would say that it's the right and proper place for a journalist; trying out one of the new container cells at Rimutaka Prison! Much as we are critical of the MSM, we wouldn't go quite that far and generalise, but ...
Anyway, we digress; in the Herald today and tomorrow, Derek Cheng is writing about the new style of prison accomodation, and it will be interesting to read his conclusion after having spent a night in one. But this, in our opinion, is the money quote:
The Corrections Department says the final cost for the unit is estimated at $5.58 million and is around 30 per cent cheaper than a similar-sized traditional unit.
That has to be good news.
UPDATE: Here's Derek Cheng's "review" of a night spent in a container in the Hutt Valley ..

I think its excellent that the prisons are looking at cost effective ways to house the prison populations. They still look relatively comfortable to me...can't understand why there are those out there who are knocking this. I think its great.
