A mining back-down

We're disappointed. It seems that the government will today announce a backdown in its plans to mine small areas of land on the conservation estate.

People-power has prevailed, and that's not necessarily a good thing. We don't believe that loud protest always equates to wholesale public opinion, but anti-mining protestors have managed to convince the government to back away from its plans. We are disappointed that wealth, vital to New Zealand's future, will be left in the ground.

We'll be interested to hear the government's justification of its backdown, and if Vernon Small is to be believed (he WAS Michael Cullen's confidante, after all!), Cabinet is divided on the issue. We'll have further comment later in the day, so watch this space ...

Listening to the public's wishes is always a bad move.

Instead of earning gratitude for giving full consideration to people's fears, the Government will get only derision.

A victory for `Renta Mob' to the detriment of New Zealands future prosperity.

John Kep drops a further rung down the ladder in my estimation.

Lordy, lordy lordy!

Those foolish people.
What do they know.
Haven't bathed for months, most of 'em.

You left out the next line Robert; the one that puts the quote in context:

"We don't believe that loud protest always equates to wholesale public opinion, but anti-mining protestors have managed to convince the government to back away from its plans."

More than a few protesters Inventory2.
Quite a few in fact.
Far more than you expected, I'll warrant.
More than Gerry and John expected, I'm sure.
Guess it was a bad idea from the start.
Certainly looks messy now. ASmazing that so many people aren't "disappointed that wealth, vital to New Zealand's future, will be left in the ground."

ha ha whinging about 'rent-a-mob'... 'must have cost a helluva lot - since it was 40 000 people (or more) who marched up Queen Street.
: )

Don't be too downhearted though.
Gerry's backdown (crow-eating etc.) will be more an attack on those nasty unbelievers than anything else. he'll say "hysterical" and lay the blame at the feet of those who "can't grasp" the "enormous opportunity" that mining presents, then he'll switch to victory mode and laud the mining that will go ahead on other land, especially that at Mataura, where precious lignite lies waiting to be rescued from the ground and spun into gold. Gerry and John won't let the great unwashed enjoy their win. They'll (we'll) pay for our audacity.

Don't be disappointed Iv2.
As any Equity Trader knows, the ongoing cycle(s) of Accumulation and Distribution don't get "left in the ground", they just get a different timing of deployment.
Simple, robust and automatic for a Trader.

And what was JK's real life work experience.??

It was wise of the Government to heed the public concern, said Mrs Turei,
noting that her predecessor Jeanette Fitzsimons CNZM made public consultation
a requirement in the Crown Minerals Act in before any changes to Schedule 4
land.

"Jeanette is a really wise woman and made sure that the law required public
consultation. She helped give ordinary Kiwis a voice so they could look after
Schedule 4 land which represents the very best of the best of our
conservation land."

The Green Party was part of a broad and deep response to the Government's
mining plans, challenging the claim that the Government's plan was just a
'stock take' last August and then, last October, revealing that the ‘stock
take’ included Mt Aspiring National Park, among others.

“I am so proud of what the green movement has accomplished, and that these
precious places will still be there for future generations,” Mrs Turei
said.

No doubt the cowards won the Cabinet battle, led by the spineless John Key and supported by Nick Smith.

Oh the wailing and gnashing of teeth! Hilarious. What a political genius Gerry is! I hope he was a better woodwork teacher.
