ALP - Mirror image

We spent a bit of time on the Sydney Morning Herald website today, checking out the Australian response to the Bledisloe Cup match last night. And while we were there, we found this story - read on:

Julia Gillard's campaign is now in diabolical trouble, facing defeat if today's trend continues and a shambles of disunity as present and past PMs circle each other.

Sheesh; sounds like a mirror image of what is going on with the New Zealand Labour Party! And we see that Phil Goff has climbed in against Chris Carter today - this from the Herald website:

Labour leader Phil Goff says he thinks errant MP Chris Carter is "unwell" and should have taken former prime minister Helen Clark's advice to move on if his heart wasn't in his job.

Mr Carter was expelled from Labour's caucus last week after sending an anonymous letter to the media, saying the party couldn't win the next election with Mr Goff as leader and he should be replaced.

Since then senior Labour MPs have questioned Mr Carter's state of mind and said he was suffering from stress.

Mr Goff was asked on TV One's Q&A programme today whether he believed Mr Carter was unwell.

"I think he is unwell," Mr Goff said.

And the story also confirmed some of our suspicions:

Mr Carter's partner, Peter Kaiser, told the Sunday Star-Times former Labour leader Helen Clark had given Mr Carter two pieces of advice.

Actually, we think that Helen Clark might have given Chris Carter a few more than two pieces of advice, but who's counting. In both New Zealand and across the Tasman, the left is showing a real propensity to self-destruct as the various factions within battle for the ascendancy. We reckon that it's not a good time to be a leftie!
