Raising the drinking age from 18 to 20 will be a conscience vote for the National Party.
However, the legislation around alcohol reform has not yet been released.
Justice Minister Simon Power said the legislation was due to have its first reading before Christmas.
A report from the Law Commission released in April which made 153 recommendations on reducing the harm caused by alcohol, including tax increases and a wide-reaching tightening of rules around the sale of alcohol.
This is a matter which goes beyond party politics. It is entirely appropriate that a conscience vote be taken, and we hope that other parties in the Parliament will give their MP's the same choice which National MP's have been given.

Because Key was too gutless to do it himself.
That's all.
Yup.
Yippee! More laws to penalise those that abide by them, whilst doing nothing to prevent the problems cause by those that don't.
I'll be having to microchip my kids next.
Well said JS.
Changing the age won't make the problem go away. This will ultimately be an exercixe in futility.
