This Sporting Life - 20/8/2010

It's Friday again, and that means that it's time to talk sport; and there's another big sporting weekend ahead.

The All Blacks face possibly their most significant match since Cardiff in 2007 when they take on the South Africans in Soweto. We'll have a proper preview tomorrow, but this match looms as hugely important; rampant All Blacks versus wounded Springboks; we can't wait! In there meantime, there's a feast of ITM Cup rugby to be enjoyed, and it's only a week until the Heartland Championship kicks off, with the mighty Wanganui chasing a third-straight Meads Cup - bring it on!

The A-League is in full swing now, as is the Premier League in England. The Phoenix hosts Central Cost on Sunday, and they will be hoping to play football and not water polo this week. Conditions last week at the Ring of Fire were reminiscent of the 1975 test match against Scotland at Eden Park (which we attended), where BeeGee Williams walked on water! The 'Nix will certainly want a win this week.

The Warriors head to Brookvale Oval to take on the in-and-out Manly. A win for the Warriors should wrap up playoffs footy, and if they can keep winning, a home semi is still on the cards. We're picking a narrow win.

What else is there? What have we missed this week? Does anyone care about the Netball against Jamaica? Are the Commonweralth Games going to be a fizzer? So many questions ...

An interesting incident at the PGA on Sunday/Monday. It seems to me that Dustin Johnson was very hard done by.

Then again why did he not call an official and get a ruling. A pretty expensive mistake.

Good point pdm - as he was in one of the leading groups, there would have been plenty of rules officials available.

As for Johnson being hard done by, all the players were told prior to the start of the tournament about the bunkers. It would seem that in the heat of battle, both Johnson and his caddy forgot the warning.

I agree Iv2, how the Boks respond on the paddock will be fascinating and the ABs handling of the high veldt and 90 000 in the Soweto Stadium all makes for a must watch.
Hopefully Donnelly's ankle will be right on the night as we could end up with a blindside flanker at lock for some of the game and the Boks will want as much set piece as they can manage. An interesting squeal from Matfield about the quick restart at lineouts that has worked so well for the ABs this year. Then again having all that height completely nullified must be galling for him in particular.

I think the Boks with be full on with the possiblity of some biffo. I may have to have this years Wanganui game at Te Kuiti which will be ok. My EPL fantasy team is just outside the top 500,000 but there are 1.8mil competing so not that bad.

A win for Hawkes Bay this week? I hope so.
