This Sporting Life - 6/8/2010

Could it REALLY be Friday again? There's been a hint of spring in the air this week, and after the rain we had on Wednesday, the grass is suddenly growing again. We'll hope to see a bit more of the golf course over coming weeks!

But there's plenty to talk about in the world of sport. Speaking of golf, Tiger's back out there this week at the WGC Invitational at Firestone Country Club on Ohio, a course he's won on numerous times. 2010 has pretty much got away from Woods, which is hardly surprising given his off-course woes, but still, you'd never bet against him getting everything together sometime soon.

The ITM Cup is in full swing, and Manawatu gave the Cantabs a heck of a fright last night before going down 27-26. There are plenty of interesting match-ups this weekend, but none moreso than the southern derby at Invercargill where Southland defends the Log of Wood against Otago. That should be a terrific occasion. And down a level, Sonny Bill Williams finally makes his New Zealand rugby debut for the Belfast club in suburban Christchurch. We're guessing that there might be one or two break camp from wherever the All Blacks are staying in the Garden City.

Football's A-League kicked off last night, but Wellington Phoenix has the bye this week. We're seriously considering a trip down to Welly next Friday night for the season opener against Gold Coast United, remembering as we do what happened the last time those lads came to Wellington! And it looks as though All Whites defender Winston Reid will be signing with West Ham United. The Hammers aren't the most fancied side in the Premier League, but it will be a great place for the youngster to further his trade.

OK; what have we missed? The Black Sticks came close to another upset at the Champions' Trophy, with Spain grabbing a last-gasp equaliser in a 4-all thriller. They now meet England at the weekend, and a win will give them a top-four spot which would be a hugely creditable achievement.

Whate else? The floor is yours ...

During the day I was thinking about the Tri Nations and wondered if anyone else had picked up on the tren developing:

2009 - Springboks clearly superior and probably 20 points better than both Australia and the All Blacks.

2010 - All Blacks clearly superior so far and probably 20 points better than both of the other two even with everyone staying on the paddock for 80mins.

2011 - Will it be the turn of the Aussies?

Great signing by West Ham. Mind you anything the Hammers do is good in my book.

Watched bits of the cantab game while trying to prepare for a presentation I'm giving for a publisher and gave up after the turbos scored early in the 2nd half. More fool me.

Ended up watching the remake of "taking of Pelam 123". It wasn't a patch on the original!

I'm looking ofrward to the shield challenge and the test. A big night in the south.

BTW the cantabs will be biting off more than they chew if they try to take neurosurgery from Dunedin. The Whopper is not happy.

Agreed Alex - the original Pelham 123 movie was far better, and the book was better still.

Interesting to see Justin Vaughan giving rugby yobbos a serve about their behaviour.

I stopped going to ODI's at Napier because of the foul language and drunken yobs and yobesses on the bank at McLean Park. It was no family day out and I would not subject my wife and adult daughters to it again.

Appropriae the verification word is parks for this.

You're right pdm - seven hours in the sun watching cricket has far more potential to produce yobboism than ninety minutes at the rugby. It's a long time since I watched cricket from the beer-stained terraces at Eden Park, and frankly, it's not a shame that they have been demolished. Even back in those days, it was not a place for the faint-of-heart!

Don't do the one day cricket any more either. Can't be bothered with the yobs anymore. Mind you after a day on the terraces at a test with some mates I used to be one of the drunken yobs! I was lucky at the time I lived within walking distance of eden park.

Auckland v Waikato at Eden park on Saturday afternoon should be a great one as well following on from the dismantling of Harbour last week. Then the test match Saturday night where I really can't see any other result than a comprehensive AB victory. Across the park the aussies don't seem to have the firepower to win

And the warriors against te sharks. My pick is a big win for the warriors geting their push for playoffs back on track

oh...and Tiger 2 over. Not looking good. Methinks his sports psychologist still has a lot of work to do to see him back at his best.
