Things are hotting up in sleepy old W(h)anganui ("H" optional). Mayor Michael Laws has said that he's standing down. So far there have been three sitting councillors announce their intentions, two from the District Council (Ray Stevens and Dot McKinnon), and one from the Regional Council (Annette Main). Each brings different strengths to the contest. Over the next few weeks, we'll look at the contenders in a little bit more detail. We're mulling over the idea of allowing the contenders the opportunity to profile themselves here; do any of our W(h)anganui readers have an opinion on that?
Every contest has its "interesting" candidates, and W(h)anganui is no exception. When nominations close on Friday, there will be some less-credentialled candidates. One of those is a young fellow by the name of Jevan Goulter. We're going to have a bit more to say about this chap over the next couple of days, but in the meantime, it's safe to say that he has made a "colourful" entry to W(h)anganui local body affairs.
There's certainly been plenty of media attention on W(h)anganui in the last few days, and not all of it has been welcome. We made a deliberate choice not to get involved in one particular episode, and we're glad we did. We don't plan to stay silent on everything here though.
So, stand by for the next episode from the latter-day Peyton Place; W(h)anganui ...
UPDATE: We've just learned that the Mayoral contest has attracted another sitting councillor; Philippa Baker-Hogan has thrown her hat into the ring.

Isn't Goulter the one who made all those allegations about being fed booze by Labour MPs and Michael Cullen smoking dope at their conference?
You wouldn't be wrong James. Watch this space; there's more to come ...
Hi guys,
Jevan Goulter is a self promoting delinquent. He has made some fairly amazing headlines and has attracted the attention of scurrilous journalists in the form of Ian Wishart. The guys abilities are evidenced in his mismanagement of a fundraiser for Carmen in 2009. The current Miss Whanganui debacle and his stepping in, is astonishing in that it reminds one of the lack of funds raised in his previous role.
I will be interested to see how he manages to corrupt actual events for his own purposes.

His abilities are questionable, along with his morals. The gay community revile him, because of his flimsy approach to the truth.

To be honest, this person will misrepresent himself to the top.
