Maori Party MP Rahui Katene has called for a public apology over the treatment of a 30-strong Christchurch whanau evicted from an Earthquake Welfare Centre.
Katene said the treatment of the Mongrel Mob-linked Martin family was "disgusting".
"To say they were free-loading because they didn't pack up and leave immediately… It really is over the top.''
Katene said she had visited the family in the shelter and had seen them helping with the relief effort.
"I'll be looking at why they were turfed out and looking for an apology from the authorities, and a public one at that.''
The Martin family of Shirley were called "repulsive" by Mayor Bob Parker after they were trespassed from the Addington Welfare Centre on Friday.
Police said family members were intimidating others and they had falsely claimed their houses were uninhabitable.
Ms Katene needs to think before opening her gob. This large and extended family was bludging, and taking advantage of provisions made for those in GENUINE need. We've only heard about the state of one house that this family was occupying, yet there were 30 of them at the welfare centre. We certainly prefer Bob Parker's version of events to that of the gang family.
Jim Anderton will however be pleased. The Martin family has promised to support him in the Christchurch mayoral election. With friends like the Martins and the Mongrel Mob, who would need enemies?
Back for Rahui Katene; wouldn't it be better if she focused her efforts on genuine cases of Maori disadvantage than on an opportunist family such as the Martins?

It is foolish to present your party to the world as if you are only interested in having gang members as your constituents. Yet Tariana, Pita have already set the precedent
