The stretch of SH2 between Pokeno and the turnoff to Thames, dubbed the "unforgiving highway", has claimed 31 lives and seriously injured more than 56 people since 2003.
What nonsense that is. Roads don't kill and main people; drivers do. And more information has emerged on this story, as one would expect - read on:
The driver of a car involved in a triple fatality on Tuesday night had been stopped earlier in the day for speeding and carrying unauthorised passengers, police say.Inspector Paul Carpenter today said the trio's car had been stopped for travelling at 130kmh at Matawai, west of Gisborne earlier in the day.
He said a traffic infringement notice found in the vehicle showed the driver had also been in breach of her graduated drivers licence, carrying unauthorised passengers.
In other words, this was an avoidable waste of three young lives. The young driver CHOSE to ignore the terms of her graduated licence, and CHOSE to speed on the day in question. Sometimes bad choices have dreadful consequences.
So let's stop the misreporting, and the spreading of blame. As unpalatable as it may be in tragic circumstances, this accident could have been avoided had these young people obeyed the law. Don't blame the road.

Heard a comment that suggested the tyres were of doubtful warrantable standard.
So we have inexperience, car not suitable for any use let alone speeding and long journey, distracting passengers outside the limited licence, an unfamiliar road and it is the fault of a "killer highway"?
G.ive me a break, thankfully the other vehicle wasnt a people mover with children going to a sports event.
