Mayor Len

Breaking news from the Herald:

Len Brown has won the contest to be the first Mayor of the Auckland Super City.

The Manukau Mayor beat his rival Auckland City Mayor John Banks with about 95 per cent of the votes counted.

Mr Brown polled 221,167 votes, compared to 161,167 votes for Mr Banks, a victory by 60,198 votes, according to the first progress result declared after the polls closed at midday.

Businessman Colin Craig was in third place with 60,198 votes.

This result had been widely tipped, although the margin of victory is surprising. We congratulate the first mayor of the Auckland Supercity. It will be interesting to see how other results pan out as the afternoon proceeds, and to see the make-up of the council which Mayor Brown will lead.

Had we been voting in Auckland, we would have supported John Banks. We commend both men on their campaigns, which will end with conflicting emotions. If this is John Banks' exit from public life, he can leave with his head held high.

Well done Len. Credit where credit's due. I used to be a Banks supporter – when he was a christian with a backbone. But he has gone soft, (on gays, on crime, on foreigners, on atheists) so I voted for Andrew Williams in this one. Anything to keep that awful awful excuse for a human being, Cameron Slater, out of the media. He is a hypocrite running under the guise of not being a hypocrite. Do you agree INV2?

No I don't; he's mentally ill, so full credit to him for having a go. He's got more ticker than I have.

In 3 years time when Lying Len has made a cock-up of the the Super City, C&R will be there to pick up the pieces.

Liarbour regains the helm. What a nightmare!

WTF!

We are going to have another Dick Hubbard-ish led council - infighting on the left and rates increases of 50%.

Don't Aucklanders learn!

Time to leave!

The joy of being of the left is that you can spend up large and those who didn't vote for you pay for it.

I think that Brown will be a freak show when he finds he has in a position beyond his abilities.
Looks like Colin Craig was a handbrake for Banks.

Anyone else have that impending feeling of doom?

Mental illness.
Ahhhh yes..... Madness is a wonderful excuse for nearly everything. Would be interested in your views of such illness as a mitigating factor if someone you didn't share political views with behaved with so much hate in their heart and mind? Your endorsement raises eyebrows.

Sense of impending doom comes only from the toy-throwing divisive right wing whining losers.

As strange as is it to reason with my own conscience, I don't live in Auckland & I'm not bitter about the result. But, as one who understands Aucklands economic significance I cant help but think Len ain't the messiah...

@Ciaron Hide waved a wand over the super-city in his pudgy hand, and wished that decent NZers would not see him for what he really is; Banks was not smart enough to see noone likes a hater and he got his comeuppance. Not sure why anyone is surprised with this result? I'm considering turning left after watching the debacle that the right has become with their divisive and angry hating of all but themselves.

Sigh, nuff said.

If i see len at eden park tomorrow i will wish him well but tell him that he will be held to account in due course should the super city turn into a cock up. for his association for Mr Singh.

But in the thank goodness for small mercies file, Cameron Brewer made it on to the council and Glenda Fryer didn't.

Len won because he ran a much more powerful campaign. Where was the Banks'campaign team? They were non starters, very little advertising, and as the incumbent, this is strange. Where was Banks?

Alex, if I see Len at Eden Park, I'll tell him to f off and not to come back. Corrupt lying b'stard that he is...

How should I recognise you? Code word "Keeping Stock"?

What a sad result for Auckland but self inflicted I guess.

Are there enough sane people on the council to keep him in line.

That's a pretrty emphatic margin.

JS,
I will be incognito. Just look for Joe Citizen!
BTW although I voted for Banks, i changed my mind about the man after the Webster Coroners court appearance.
An unneccessary diversion imho.
