"I made a comment about Anand Satyanand that was to do with his weight. He is a walking poster for obesity and he looks like he's never left the buffet table since he was a young man. Now I'm sorry, but that's just the truth. He's fat. He needs to do something about it - end of story.
"I'm meant to apologise for that? You've got to be joking. That's what he is."
Monday; 4.30pm - from the Herald:
Michael Laws has this afternoon apologised for comments he made last week about the Governor General, despite previously stating he would not do so.
In a statement on the RadioLive website, Mr Laws apologised for calling Sir Anand Satyanand a "large, fat man" who has "never left" the buffet table.
"I apologise to the Governor General for comments which were, upon reflection, uncharitable and inappropriate," he said.
"I reserve the right to be controversial and outspoken.
"But my off-air comments, in particular, crossed the line from puckish to insulting, and although that was not my intent, it was still inappropriate.
So who got into Michael Laws' ear then; you'd have to say that backing down is not his style. Or is TVNZ on the hunt for a new Breakfast host? Could the former mayor of W(h)anganui be on the head-hunt list?
The plot thickens ...

Hey, last time I looked the GG looked quite 'fat', just as Gerry Brownlee is fat. And I am fat (105KG).
So Laws gets it in the neck for stating a plain fact!
Wow a genuine mystery huh?
Yr right, Laws would never normally back down no matter how wrong he is...
(hey, yr not related are you Invention?)
The bosses must be nervious - they lost something like 70 million last financial year and the threat of advertisers walking would certainly put the shits up them.
TV host? I can imagine his ego is saying "oh please, bring it on", but he has a lot of freedom on radio and I can't imagine introducing women's weekly type shmuck would thrill him.
xx
Santa.
" He's fat. He needs to do something about it - end of story"
This is brilliant!
I can't weight to see what Farrar has to say about Laws' comment. I was banned from Kiwiblog for hinting that Farrar needed to lose a little weight (for the sake of his health, particularly his knees).
I'll have my hypocrisy radar on full power.
Just a warning here Robert; I'm not exactly a lean, green racing machine myself (built for comfort; not for speed), so tread warily! The cold roast pork from Saturday night was a very nice dinner, accompanied by left-over roast spud, kumara, pumpkins, yams, parsnips, courgettes and mushrooms warmed in the frypan.
And here's what I posted at DPF's yesterday on his post about Laws' comments:

On behalf of all men who enjoy lingering at the buffet table; up yours Michael!"
Ha! I am that 'lean, green racing machine' you describe Invent and I join you in saying 'up yours Michael!'.
So nice when we can agree!
Indeed; I thought you'd like that epithet Robert!
I love it when I use my card at the petrol station and it says,
WELCOME THOROUGHBRED
Hey, there are two restaurants in Christchurch (at least there were before the earthquakes) called 'Two Fat Indians'.
Should we ostracise these people too?
Absolutely Anon; we'll let Matt Jones from Unite know, and he can name and shame them :)
Hey Robert, did you know that you cant fatten a throughbred, But they can break down!!
Chris Bird - they can indeed but I'm careful not to take on races I can't win and am on a carefully managed diet of super-healthy food which I sometimes follow.
I'm not ready for glueing just yet.
btw - Key has squeezed both Laws and Henry.
I'm on a diet too Robert; a seafood diet!
Is blubber a food from the sea?
A lot of people allege Lhaws is not a pleasant fellow, that he has massive self-image problems and seems to lack any real intellect; and he keeps very dubious company and is likely going through a mid-life crisis. These things need to be said, because they are what people think and see to be the case. Plain speaking is what it is. Good old speculative plain speaking.
