The Canterbury alarm clock

There's a whole lotta shakin' going on in Christchurch this morning. Canterbury Quake Live reports a magnitude 5.0 quake at 6.03am this morning.

As you can see from the above graphic, this is the 10th biggest quake in the sequence that began with The Big One on 4th September, and it is the biggest since the 4.9 magnitude jolt we experienced on Boxing Day. Centred between Halswell and Tai Tapu, areas which suffered significant damage in September. This one won't have done anything to calm the nerves of the Christchurch populus.

Fortunately, some of the Christchurch whanau are currently in the North Island, but we'll be doing the obligatory round of phone calls in a moment. Our thoughts are with all in the Canterbury region as the nerves take another pounding; will this ever end?

UPDATE: CQL has just upgraded this one to a 5.1 magnitude, and the tag on their graphic now reads "8th Largest Shake" ...

As a resident in that vicinity, I can assure you this is not something to write home about...

It was a ripper here in Akaroa, noisy, a long roller with a shuddering jolt in the middle of the sequence. No new damage as yet but left me decidedly unsettled.

Thats a bugger gravedodger... A more apt description of my experience would be: not all that and a bag of chips

There have apparently been three significant 'quakes this morning.

Never felt any of them.
