We've been feeling decidedly off-colour for a few days, and with the long weekend (for Wellington province dwellers) in the offing, we thought it prudent to pay our doctor a visit yesterday.
We're glad we did. He took one glance at the red lesions on our trunk, and uttered one word - "Shingles". In quick succession we visited the chemist and had a blood test before heading home to rest.
It would seem to be one of those condition where you have to get worse before you can get better, but time will be the great healer. We're reflecting on our lot; there's a heck of a lot of people out there worse off than us. We'll try and keep our pity party to a minimum, but it's not the start we had planned for 2011.

Take care - make sure Mrs Inv gives you maximum attention.
Maximum attention; but from a distance pdm - the nerve endings are very sensitive!
Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy Inv2.
Would bathing in the milk of asses help?
Asses are in short supply in Wanganui Robert, and the ex-mayor is not of the milk-producing gender. Calamine lotion will be purchased today.
BTW I finally got that post up at The Sports Geek. It might give you something to ponder in your misery.
I'll check it out pdm; I must get around to contributing something there; perhaps an epitaph to Dan Vettori ...
Definitely not the start you want or need to 2011.
Shingles can linger so do try to take Mrs I2's advice when she tells you to rest.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Sponge with calendula solution.
Relax. It's stress wot done it!
Get well. Take it easy.
Shingles is not fun.
As one who has suffered this rather debilitating affliction and made a full and very quick recovery, I will pass on the advice I received at the time.
DO NOT ALLOW THE PAIN/DISCOMFORT FACTOR TO CONTINUE. Get what ever pain relief it takes or the pain becomes endemic and recovery will be extended.
On another note, Shingles is supposed to be from stress and stress can take many forms. Me, I had removed what I considered to be all stress from my life as it bit me some 2 /3 months after selling the farm that had come to be a source of stress as the years rolled by and the body struggled to cope with what the mind wanted to achieve. I concluded the stress that triggered my Shingles was no more than 'change' and although I was as happy as a pig in the proverbial, my body regarded the change for what I considered the better, was actually stress.
Get well, try to relax and all the very best I can wish. Give your body every chance to heal itself.
Regards Murray
Thanks for the insight Gravedodger. My pain threshhold isn't great, so I'm staying on top of that.
I can't help but wonder if this is a by-product of having worked our butts off up until Christmas, stopped for ten days, then leapt straight back onto the treadmill again, only to fall off two weeks later.
Sympathies Inv...I understand it's a pretty horrible affliction...apparently very much to do with your immune system being compromised, + stress. IMHO, consume loads of garlic, green leafy veg, drop any excess weight, exercise regularly, and loads of water...you know, all the boring stuff! Get better soon.
Hmmm...that Suz sounds like a greeny!
Notice how un-provocative I'm being on your blog Inv2?
That's to facilitate your speedy recovery.
Ele is suffering in your place and Whowuddathort's gone to ground :-)
Very thoughtful of you Robert. Medical opinion suggests that I'll be recovered about the day after the election ;)
@ Suz; thanks for your suggestions, but I'll pass on the garlic thanks all the same; it and I don't get on very well.
Shame about your aversion to garlic Inv...personally I can't get enough of it and dose my family up with it so we all equally stench and don't notice one another!! Think you can get it in capsule form from chemist/health-food store, odourless and tasteless.
What's this about Ele and Who? We NEED you Inv. (Please note Robert's dislike of upper-case).
Lots of rest Inv.
