The Talkback Party

So Maggie Barry wants to become a National MP. We wish her well, but we hope that she is realistic about her chances, firstly of getting the Botany nomination, and secondly, the job that would await her should she succeed and become an MP.

But it got us thinking (which is no mean feat, just at the moment!); radio talkback hosts deal with people all the time, from the lucid to the extreme. They actually have a pretty good feel for the pulse of public opinion.

So here's our idea; why don't the talkback hosts band together, and form their own party. Michael Laws is rumoured to want to return to national politics, so why waste his obvious talents on New Zealand First? Here's his chance to lead a poltical party all of his own.

Initially, we thought of it being the Radio Live party, but that might be a bit limiting. Still, the "new voice in talk radio" boasts Laws, Barry, Willie Jackson and John Tamihere amongst its ranks, so there's a pretty solid nucleus, even if it represents a broad church of ideologies. But others we could add to the mix would be Leighton Smith and Larry Williams to represent the right, whilst Radio New Zealand is reportedly full of those who lean leftwards. And then, of course, there's Paul Henry!

Have we missed anyone? Feel free to add to this list if there's a glaringly obvious omission. These guys can talk the talk, so let's see if they rise to the challenge!

Sounds an interesting concept however, I doubt Larry Williams in particular could tolerate Laws and Jackson. Murray Deaker used to always have Williams on about doing his scone and throwing his golf clubs so a bit of Mallard like pugilism might eventuate.

Leighton Smith would also find it difficult with those guys as well but I would expect him to be more restrained.

Difficult to see where Maggie Barry sits. Hardly a contender for Botany I would have thought and doesn't she live in or near Masterton? Therefre her logical seat is to take over from John Hayes in Wairarapa.

Surely with 12 candidates several with obvious worthy credentials some-one who has only been a member of the party for one month would not be selected.

Well, there is Danny Watson.

He is always able to find a very. very. simple. answer to most problems. It's not rocket science.

Danny Watson would be FAR too sensible for Parliament Anon!

There seems to be some suggestion that Maggie Barry does not meet the membership criterion, ie not a member for the minimum period prescribed in National Party Rules.
If that is the case, then the Botany Electorate committee would rule that is the case before sending the approved nominations to the Regional office before the Pre-selection Committee meets.
However, the National Party Rules will almost certainly have a clause allowing any such matter to be overridden should the need arise.
Whilst this may meet with a level of acceptance where List deliberations are concerned, there is almost certainly to be some level of disapproval where any such candidature for an Electorate seat is in competition with nominees who meet the Rule Book criteria.
