UPDATED - The Toowoomba floods

UPDATE: 3.50pm - The Herald is reporting that parts of Brisbane, including the CBD are being evacuated as a "wall of water" . We wait in hope that things will not be as bad as predicted.

In the meantime, there is no shortage of footage of the surge in Toowoomba in YouTube, and this clip gives a pretty graphic idea of what went on yesterday. Having seen this, we don't think that the term "inland tsunami" is too far from the truth ...

*******************************************************

Friends returned from a camp at Toowoomba in Queensland yesterday. We reckon that they were VERY lucky to get out when they did!

Flash floods swept through the city yesterday afternoon and evening, and the death toll is rising. Just as the floods around Rockhampton further north started to recede, the southern part of the state has been hit by devastating floods

Check out this story from Stuff; most significantly the video which is embedded within. The confirmed death toll from these latest floods has altready risen to eight, and is expected to go higher. up to 72 people have been reported as missing.

Radio reports suggest that the rain is continuing, and there are fears of significant flooding in Brisbane and its environs this afternoon. We'll keep an ear and an eye on developments. In the meantime, our thoughts and our prayers are with those who have been affected by these floods.

My Aunt, Uncle and Cousin live in Toowoomba. They said that so far their house has only had water come up to the first step of their house, as they are in a higher part of the toowoomba township.

However, my uncle says that the rain is continuing unabated. He siad it is falling like a sheet. So thick and heavy.

As I am completely in the dark as to the geography of the areas of Queensland being devastatedWould it be a real information revelation for the idiot MSM to actually prepare a relief map of the areas affected so we plebs could get a handle on the causes and predicted outcomes, too difficult I guess. Meanwhile we will be shown image on image of flood water going we know not where (the sea I guess) and coming from the skies duh. It must be quite a helpless feeling knowing that even sitting in the sun a massive flood is inexorably coming to a suburb near you.
The coverage is up to the normal sensational and shallow heights we expect.
An "inland tsunami" ffs. We suffered a flash flood on the Taurau River some years ago when an Earthquake during a flood event built a dam in a gorge then released a surge killing several calves in a so called safe paddock when they became separated from their foster mothers in the dark and drowned trying to get back to them. That surge caused a rise of one meter above normally expected high flood but a "Tsunami", not even close at all, MUPPETS.

Impossible to know what's behind this bizarre, once in a hundred-year weather.

"Bizarre" is an apt word Robert. The last time I was in southern Queensland, they were worried about a 10-year drought. That'll be the least of their worries now. It's odd that none of this weather has yet spilled down our way.

God is doing it. If you believe in god, then you must believe he is in control of the weather. That's a fact. Put your faith where your blog is INV2. Tell us why you really think these floods are happening. Do you think god is doing it or is it science doing it?

Inv2 - same here. The Queensland Government wanted to dam the Mary River and the protestors were working (perhaps not the right word) hard to stop the dam.

This looks disastrous! I am glad I don't live anywhere near there....

The authorities are now saying that the floods in Brisbane are likely to peak on Thursday, and be worse than the disastrous 1974 floods. The outlook is not good.

Having been a regular user of the Hume Hyway and the diverting to Canberra over the last 20 odd years I have waited for "Lake" George to actually have some water in it. If it was ever anywhere near full it would cover several hundreds if not thousands of acres, but I have never seen it with water, I believe that has changed and if it was in central/ south Queensland it may now be overflowing. Oh the contradictions of the climate in the "Lucky Country" but of course it is all the fault of those bloody Greens causing Bush firesand the subsequent climate change by legislating for non clearance of fire fuel in the form of debris from bluegums, hang on they are protecting the planet arnt they, silly me.

Perhaps God is doing it? Just saying.

The videos emerging from the area are just freaky. It's easy to see how people can be swept away, and this is a disaster of epic proportions.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the residents affected by the floods with the realisation that we are all going to know people, within a few degrees of separation.
