We climb about the silver birdie shortly on our way home. We'll be back in the office this afternoon, whereupon normal life (and blogging) will resume. We'll have a few more reflections on our visit in due course; perhaps tomorrow, when we have processed the events of yesterday.
It's been an interesting few days down in Christchurch to say the least. Actually "interesting" isn't the right word; we used "surreal" yesterday, but could just have easily used "sobering" or "harrowing".
But the overwhelming emotion we've experienced is hope. No-one we've met over the last few days is abandoning their home city, and everyone expects a stronger and more vibrant Christchurch to emerge from the rubble, the dust, the liquefaction and the stench. That says a lot for the inconquerable nature of the human spirit.

Your views and empathy strike a resonance for many who choose to stay and make the city great again. Thankyou and hurry back to hopefully see the progress.
"When there were allegations of impropriety surrounding Richard Worth, he immediately stood down as a Minister"
Hilarious Inv2 - thanks for brightening my day!
Are you disputing that Robert? Anyway, do you recall saying this at the time?

Disgraceful! What a stain on National and on Key. This is deeply damaging to the National government already and looks to get much, much worse. If the police charges are over something unsavoury as well as illegal, Nationa’s and Key’s credit with the public will be destroyed. Is this the type of MP anyone, left or right wants in government? Awaiting developments with glee.
[DPF: Gleeful about an alleged crime. This says so much about you]
History records that Worth was never charged with anything, but he resigned anyway. And is the incident reported today a "stain" on Goff and on Labour? Or does it only leave a stain when someone from the right transgresses?
And lest I be accused of fabrication, here's the link:

Village? That idiot!
he said: "If the police charges are over something unsavoury as well as illegal.."
If.
If there are charges in the present case over something unsavoury as well as illegal, Labour's and Goff's credibility, if they deny and obfuscate the way Key did in the Richard Worth case and refuse to explain to the country what was happening will be destroyed.
How's that Inv2? Fair?
But Key didn't "deny or obfuscate" Robert. He required WORTH TO RESIGN AS A Minsiter (by threatening to sack him if he didn't), then made it clear that there was no place for Worth in National's caucus; swift and decisive, he was!
Compare that to Goff; he's ALREADY lied to the media by claiming a couple of days ago not to know anything, then having to admit that Hughes briefed him two weeks ago. If Key had lied like that, you'd be calling for his head.
Key fired Worth and then refused to say why.
That's the disfunction there!
If Goff fires a Labour MP then refuses to say what the issue was, I'll be equally disgusted.
Why was Worth fired Inv2?
Do you know?
Transparency.
Honesty.
Open Government.
Accountability.
Didn't see any of that then.
Doesn't go away, that smelly stuff that hangs around the Worth/Key case, does it.
If this business ends up stinking like that, I'll be just as appalled.
Were you appalled by the Worth/Key case Inv2?
Last comment on this thread please Robert; you've had latitude.
I was appalled at Worth's behaviour, which was inappropriate for a Minister outside of Cabinet. I was pleased when Key said that he had lost confidence in Worth, and required his Ministerial warrant. I was pleased when Worth did the honourable thing and resigned as an MP.
