We watched very little sport at the weekend. Given that our favoured teams performed pretty averagely, that might not have been a bad thing! So we'll be relying on the opinions of those who DID watch over the weekend to fill in our gaps.
It was a mixed weekend for New Zealand teams in Super Rugby. Given that there were two matches between New Zealand teams, it was never going to be a clean sweep weekend. Already, the Crusaders and the Blue look to have the goods to go all the way in this season's tournament. Both won going away (against the Highlanders and Hurricanes respectively). And given that both teams are loaded with All Blacks, that's a good thing.
It looks as though it's going to be another long season for Warriors fans. They lost to the Wests Tigers in an error-riden match, and with an 0-and-two record, it's not the start to the season that the fans were looking for. Life doesn't get any easier; they face the premiers, St George-Illawarra this weekend.
The Black Caps are now preparing for a quarter-final against South Africa after a lame batting effort against Sri Lanka. The only good news was Pakistan's upset win against Australia, which means that the Black Caps avoided India, for the moment. South Africa is beatable, as England showed, and has a World Cup "choker" tag to shed. It's still a huge hurdle, but anything can happen in a two-horse race.
That's about all we have time for this morning; feel free to fill the gaps on any sporting contests worthy of comment...

Ireland's best performance of the season by a long way. They put England under pressure and England went missing.
England didn't look convincing against Scotland the week before, so I wasn't entirely surprised. The Crusaders were brilliant. For the first 40 minutes I thought Jamie Joseph made a really clever play by leaving Mackintosh and Rutledge on the bench til later, but now I rue some opportunities the Highlanders didn't take in the first half when they might have managed to stay in touch..
Mighty, agreed.
james, well done the Irish. all my cousins will be happy.
As for me the weekend was spent assisting with race management in the BMW Auckland regatta. Very enjoyable.
The Warriors didn't play badly but then again they didn't play very well either. I have a nagging feeling that at the end of round 5, with the teams that they are facing, we could be looking at a 1-5 win-loss ratio which may put them just above the Sharks.
