New Zealand First leader Winston Peters made some big-spending promises to the Grey Power conference in Hamilton last night - including paying part of their power bill.
Doubtless Grey Power lapped up every word that Their Winnie uttered. We wonder though how they responded to the PM - read on:
Mr Peter's after-dinner speech competed with other politicians over the weekend, including Prime Minister John Key on Saturday, who reminded delegates that in the past three years, superannuation for a couple had increased by $166 a fortnight, being a 19 per cent in nominal terms or 8.5 per cent allowing for inflation.
It would seem that superannuitants have done well under the John Key-led government, which is probably why Winston has had to up the ante in terms of what he is promising.
But is case Winston hasn't noticed, the cupboard is bare; there's simply not enough money to go around. Peters probably realises that, but it won't stop the promises. And he could immediately improve the government's economic position by $158,000 by paying back the money that NZ First used unlawfully in 2005.
Doubtless Peters supporters will jump down our throats and repeat the meme that Winston made donations to charity before the 2008 election. We don't buy that. Peters refuses to name the charities, or to provide any authentication of his claims. That renders those claims open to scepticism.
And given that one of Winston Peters' last acts as an MP and party leader was to be censured by his peers for knowingly misleading Parliament over the Owen Glenn donation, why would we believe claims that he refuses to authenticate?
Winston Peters can promise away to his heart's content. But unless he gets back into Parliament, and unless he is in government his promises now will be as meaningless as his attempts to convince us that he has paid the $158k back.

On Newtalk ZB this morning in a "news" item (used advisedly) WRP was quoted, describing The Don As a Dinosaur and when I had recovered my feet and stopped the gales of laughter I realised they had no idea of the total irony of the bloody item.
The Odious Dwarf has been in politics for how many decades, The Don is not far into his second and young WRP is how old, sheesh.
But it's you who support the hollow men.
Focus on what your idols are doing and how poorly they are running the country. Then you'll get a true sense of how much the right have poked the economy over 3 years.
anon .. you leftie toss-pots who continually raise the Hollow Men/Exclusive Brethren saga need to get a grip. I know the 2005 election was tipped in Labours favour over this red herring but it failed in 2008 so why do you think people would care about it in 2011?
Ok. Forget the hollow men. Even through Brash is back. You know. Eyes wide shut. Head in the sand. Ignore reality.
Instead, focus on what your idols are doing and how poorly they are running the country. Then you'll get a true sense of how much the right have poked the economy over 3 years. Key's mantra of no one is worse off??? What a twamp.
anon - given the mess NACT were left by Clark and Cullen they have done a fair job on putting things back on track. Not as good as they should have, especially with the mandate they were given by voters but we are a bloody sight better off than if Labour had won another three years.
Announcements today indicate that real progress will be made from 2012 until 2014/15.
The 'mess' is entirely propaganda. And you've fallen for it. Unthinking. It's a real shame you can't see it for what it is. (Or else you're just being silly) Things are much worse under a Nat. Govt. It always turns out this way. Undoing the solid platform they had to work with. Imagine if they'd been given a REAL mess. The centre and the liberal progressive thinkers are tired of being spun the BS of the right.
Christ aren't you culling the commie comments.
How hard is it to understand: every cent is borrowoed.
Every cent of super.
Every cent of the dole, dpb, sickness, invalids...
Every cent of "heath" spending from the GP to the plane trips to Sydney for cancer treatment.
Every cent of "education" from childcare centres to kindy to primary to secondary to every poly, uni, wananga.
Every cent for settlements, TV, Radio, BMWs, Army, Navy, Airforce, Cops, Prison guards
all on the tick
NZ has never ever been this bad before.
Not in 1984 under Muldoon: that Roger had to fix.
Not in 1991 under Caygill: that Ruth had to fix.
The current mess is worse than both of them put together.
Announcements today indicate that real progress will be made from 2012 until 2014/15.
Real progress demands not only balancing the budget now but getting the 100% GDP debt paid back as soon as possible! (say 2015).
Paying back say 20% of GDP per year.
Brash has a plan that will do this - the 2025 task forces lays it out. It start with a corporate tax rate of 9% or less - like Canada; 25% cuts to all benefits and state sector salaries; eliminating all those benefits, wff, loans, health, education etc etc etc that we can't afford any more.
Think anything English comes up with will compare?
Yes!! Finally you'll admit the Nats are a shocker! And on the evidence you've just conjured ACT are shown to be worse by far!
