The first shot is fired!

The first shots have been fired in the North Shore electorate campaign - Stuff reports, and provides a memorable quote:

No pohutukawa is safe now Andrew Williams is running for election in the North Shore, National candidate Maggie Barry says.

It had to happen, we guess. Buth the gloves, whether they be boxing ones or gardening ones, are off; read on:

Former North Shore mayor Williams, who this week announced he would stand for New Zealand First in the November 26 election, says Barry was ''parachuted'' in by the party hierarchy to stand in the safe seat.

He said of his rival: ''I've always thought Maggie Barry is a nice lady. I've always liked what she's offered in the gardening world, but I think politics is a slightly different field.''

Barry, who presented Maggie's Garden Show for 12 years, retorted: ''This from the man from whom no pohutukawa tree is safe? I know about plants and I know what they don't like.''

She was referring to allegations Williams urinated against a tree outside council offices last year.

Maggie Barry has given a pretty strong hint here that although she is a political novice, she can use words well, and isn't going to be bullied or intimidated by the likes of Andrew Williams. North Shore could well be a seat to keep an eye on during the election campaign.

I suspect any benefit the tree received from the nitrogen Williams deposited on it was cancelled out by the alcohol content...what would a pissed tree look like? :-Y
