The Monday Wrap - 8 August 2011

It's been another busy sporting weekend. The highlight of course was the All Blacks' comprehensive victory over Australia, but we've already covered that off.

There was a feast of ITM Cup action. We tipped the Otago vs Southland and Manawatu vs Taranaki matches as the highlights of the round, and so it came to pass. Southland was too good for the Blues and Golds in the last representative match at Carisbrook, whilst Manawatu turned on another gutsy performance to beat Taranaki, and surge to the top of the lower echelon table. Promotion to the premiership beckons for Manawatu if they can maintain their form with the compressed programme.

The Warriors suffered a heartbreaking one point loss to the Brisbane Broncos in a match that they should have won but for tries conceded either side of half-time. It's not the first time that the Warriors have been caught out in this manner, and an 80-minute effort will be required come the play-offs; they still hold sisth place after the weekend, but hopes of a top-four finish have pretty much evapourated. Sean Johnson and Kevin Locke were the stars for the Warriors.

Adam Scott is poised to win the WGC Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club, whilst Tiger Woods has finished well down the field. We'll have more to say on that later in the morning. And Danny Lee has had a second-place finish in the latest Nationwide Tour event. This is a significant result for Lee; with the $47,850US pay cheque, he has risen to 10th on the Nationwide Tour money list, and now seems assured of a place among the top 25 earners for the season who automatically graduate to golf's Holy Grail, the PGA Tour, or the Big Tour, as it's known in the nether regions where Lee is currently plying his trade.

In other news Scott Dixon has finally recorded his first IndyCar win of the season, the Tall Blacks basketballers have upset China, and Valerie Adams has won another Diamond League event; she's in great form ahead of the World Track and Field Championships in a couple of weeks time.

That's all we can think of for the moment; go Adam Scott!

In other news: North Otago won the first inter-provinical game at the new Forsyth Barr stadium in Dunedin.

And it was much more plesant watching there than it would ahve been at Carisbrook, it's a wonderful venue.
