Stranded on a Wellington motorway, 89-year-old Tom Keogh was touched by a simple act of kindness by "a fine young man" who delivered him petrol and a warm pie.
"His name was Jacob, his car registration was ELY and he wore his cap correctly," he told The Dominion Post.
Mr Keogh's Ford Laser ran out of petrol on the motorway between Tawa and Porirua last week, in the middle of the snowstorm.
He rang the Automobile Association, and was told help would be up to 90 minutes away.
But after about 30 minutes, a car pulled up. "A young man, probably not more than 20 or 21, came and asked me if I was in trouble.
"He insisted on driving to Porirua for me, and arrived back 20 minutes later with 10 litres of petrol, which he emptied into my tank.
"He even gave me a lovely warm pie. Talk about a good samaritan."
The young man refused to take any money.
And in the face of this, Mr Keogh was able to find a bit of good Irish humour; read on:
Mr Keogh, who moved to New Zealand from Ireland in 1954, said: "The only other country in the world where something like this might happen is Ireland, except there they'd bring you a pint of Guinness to wash it down"
He said he was prompted to contact The Dominion Post because the incident showed him that many young people were fine examples for society.
"Nobody ever writes in unless it's bad news. They should not all be tarred with the same brush. I just wanted to indicate that the world's not all bad.
So well done to Jacob, and good on Mr Keogh for telling the Dom-Post about it. There's so much doom and gloom around that it's nice to see a simple act of kindness getting a bit of attention. And we hope that Mr Keogh remembered to blow on the pie in case it was thermo-nuclear!
