Remembering 9/11

Ten years have elapsed since al Quaeda terrorists launched their attack on the USA. Sure, it's still only Saturday in the US, but this is the day on which we will mark the occasion.

During the week we went looking for something to mark this sad anniversary. We found this documentary; it's in four parts, and the link to the next part is easily found with whichever episode one is watching. It's the story of the plot and its execution, but its also a story of heroism, with interviews with survivors, and tributes to those whose heroism saw them going into the World Trade Centre as people were fleeing the building.

9/11 was an event which changed the world, quite literally. We hope and pray that it is never repeated, but the reality is that there will be further terrorist acts.

Today, our thoughts, prayers and aroha are with all who mourn.

On that morning i turned the radio on at 6am to hear Paul Holmes talking about a plane crash he was watching on Sky TV.

So I turned the TV on in time to see the second plane fly into the World Trade centre building.

I won't forget that sight, ever.

I seem to remember this happening ten years ago tomorrow.

Maybe I'm a New Zealander.

And let us be thankful that America had a President that was willing to!

And round and round we go, leaving a trail of blood behind us.
It's God's Will.

Changed the world alright. The Americans suddenly understood the reality of Terrorism and it dried up the IRA's funding overnight.

Every cloud...

Robert Guyton, you disgusting apologist.

smttc - you foolish jump-to-conclusions clown.

@ Tinman - cut me some slack mate! It will soon be 9/11 in the USA, and by the time that the USA Eagles' match against Ireland kicks off at 6pm, it will certainly be 9/11 in both countries. Inspired timing by whoever scheduled this match for today.

Robert; all religions have extremists. Have you bothered to watch the video I embedded; with the Muslim clerics demanding that "Blood must flow. There must be widows. There must be orphans"?

The majority of Muslims and Christians abhor that kind of extremism. You regularly mock my faith; I remain silent about yours. Your comment about "God's will" will be offensive to many, and smttc's response is nowhere near as strong as it might have been.

Hey Inv2 - I'm going to the Scottish Supporter's .v. Colac Bay game this afternoon, with my notebook and camera.
Want me to write the game up for you to post here?
Imagine it - Robert Guyton, guest sports-poster on Keeping Stock.
Whaddayasay Inv2?

Inv2 - Thank you for this 9/11 post. Like many I watched TV with growing horror and sadness as the events unfolded 10 years ago, and wondered if we were witnessing the start of WW3. Thankfully not, but I suspect much treasure will be spent and much more blood will flow before it is all finished.

Peace would be much more preferable, but it only takes one party to start a conflict.

With regard to Robert Guyton - he remains a contraction to me. I have sought the opinions of Southlanders who assure me that he presents well, is reasoned, contributes usefully to debates etc in his public role in Southland. Yet on this and a few other blogs he seems to develop another personality, which many have observed. Interesting to say the least.

Thanks again for the post. The world indeed changed that day.

The terrorists claimed they followed God's will, Bush claimed his actions were God's will.
When you attack people, they fight back.
The Middle East attacked the West, the West attacked America, round and round it goes, blood everywhere. Who attacked first? How far back do you want to go?
'Disgusting apologist'? Bullsh*t. Who am I 'apologising' for? Religion and its Gods not a factor? Tell that to both sides of the fight and see how well they receive your claim.
Jabba - that's a Middle Eastern name isn't it?

Feel free to e-mail something through Rob, and we'll see what we can do.

As for "God's will"; there's a HUGE difference between people who think, or who are brainwashed into thinking that they are doing God's will, and God's will.

Shoulda put "" around the phrase then, shouldn't have I.
God's will still operates without humans then does it? Or is it expressed through humans?
As for "You regularly mock my faith"
I don't think that's true at all Inv2. I mock the characters in the political party you follow, certainly, but not your faith.
Got a rugby game to get to.

oh no .. Guyton .. Scottish.
Hey bOb, we have so much in common, well, Scottish heritage maybe but that is all thank goodness.
bOb .. What mined minerals were extracted from the planet to make your camera or doesn't it count as they were sourced from another country?

"I mock the characters in the political party you follow"
bOb is a Greenie who mocks the Nats MP's. Mmmmm
Russ "give my flag back Norman" Metiria "bling/empty vessel" Turei, Commie Locke, Delahunty, Hughes, Hague, Kedgley and Graeme.
You are such a hoot bob and maybe you are a comedian?

I'll happily cut you some slack I2 but, unhappily, neither today nor tomorrow will be 9/11 in New Zealand.

The 'planes were flown into the WTC on 12 September (12/09) NZ time.

To bring memorial services forward one day trivialises the occasion, something, out of respect to the Americans, I refuse to do.
