Raising the Standard of SMOG's

For a change, it's not a Labour MP who has committed this SMOG (Social Media Own Goal) although a Labour candidate is involved. Our mates at The Standard published the cleverly photoshopped image of aspiring MP Lesley Soper alongside her opponent's ute.

Now, by The Standard's standards, that's quite clever. But The Standard folks forgot one small thing; Photoshop is not the sole preserve of the Left, and the image has been ever so slightly modified again:

Oh dear! Now apart from the fact that Lesley Soper probably does have No Hope of winning Invercargill on 26 November (there's the small matter of a 6664 majority to overturn), it does show the dangers of digital attacks on a tech-savvy opponent.

And as long as Labour and its allies keep coming up with these SMOG's, you can bet that, having coined the acronym SMOG, we'll keep blogging about it!

Yeah. Changing 'Vote Soper' to 'No hope' is way wittier than tweaking
"brighter' to 'blighted'. What was Labour thinking???

Look, can I help you out here, Inv2?
The funny line would be 'No hoper'.

Sharpen up lads!

I agree Robert, if the subject of derision was solely Ms Soper.

But just at the moment, the "No Hope" message on a billboard just above Labour's logo is rather prophetic don't you think?

robertguyton said...

No, I don't.
This feeble attempt to turn the tables on Leslie Soper is a SMOG, Inv2.

Oh Robert; where's your sense of fun and adventure? The Standard has used a photo of Lesley Soper to attack National; someone else has retaliated.

Lighten up Robert; are you English or Irish by chance?

@robertguyton, I'm responsible for the second 'modification' of the photo, and while comedic value was considered, it was more of a "wow you guys are clever, but look what I managed in 5 minutes at 1am, with MS Paint while half asleep." My target was not in any way Ms Soper (though she did present a pretty open target) mainly because I don't know her at all (I hope she's not of the petty Labour old guard) but rather the idiots at The Standard.

Here's all you need to know about Lesley Soper Ratchet:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesley_Soper

A multiple loser in General Elections in the Clutha-Southland seat, she has twice been a list MP; prior to the 2005 election, and prior to the 2008 election. She is another of the reasons why MMP needs to be expunged or highly modified.

But a darned fine effort on MS Paint; well done!

PS: Robert is one of those who only laughs at his own jokes...

Ratchet - Labours modification of the word brighter was clever, wasn't it. Every time I see National's 'brighter future' now, I see, 'blighted future'. That's effective undermining, I reckon. And look, I'm not implying anywhere in this comment that your name sums up your effort, that's how polite I am.

Btw Ratchet, are you going to have a go at this one? It's a favourite of Inv2's.

I notice that the sign you linked is another direct attack on an individual, as is the comment regarding my screen name. Seems to be a common theme for the left, attack the person not the party/policy.

Perhaps the policy is a little difficult to attack, as it is better than anything that has come out of the left wing caucus for a while? Who knows? Certainly not a mechanical/marine engineer who uses a (paid for by himself) ratchet every day....

robertguyton said...

Policy?
Ha!
Good one!
No. That sign is a pointing at something quite different from policy, Ratchet.
Btw, I meant nothing by the play on your name and expected you'd enjoy it, being, as you are, someone who likes to mess with words.

@ Ratchet; you'll learn that Robert's first instinct is to play the man, not the ball; especially when what the man says doesn't fit his worldview. For a supposedly principled Greenie, he's actually remarkably intolerant of others' opinions, especially those who run blogs.

Ratchet said...

To tell you the truth Inv2, I'm having a harder time finding principled greenies these days. Rob was principled, so was Jeanette. Nandor was so principled he left the party!

I disagreed with a lot of what they said, but I respected their views, and their views didn't waver.

I kinda miss those guys actually....

robertguyton said...

Well Ratchet, it was Rod, Rod Donald, and yes, he certinly was a man of principle. It's very sad that he died. I knew him well. Jeanette, whom I also know well, is still with us, still active and still highly principled. She continues to fight hard for the environment, even though she has retired from conventional politics.Nandor, whom I know quite well, is also still an actively principled man and didn't, as you imply, leave the party because of any lack of principle therein. Those MPs who are represent the party presently are cut from the same principled cloth as Rod, Jeanette and Nandor.
Tell me, Ratchet, did you find John Key's throat-slitting gesture, the eye-rolling and petulant behaviour to be that of a principled man?

The last sentence is irrelevant to this thread Robert, and would be deleted if it could be; but then I'm sure you know that. There have been plenty of opportunities here to canvass that issue.

robertguyton said...

I'm responding to this comment from Ratchet, Inv2, "I notice that the sign you linked is another direct attack on an individual". The 'individual' he's avoiding naming is John Key and the 'attack' is the word 'scumbag' that has been used on a mocked-up billboard, much in the way Ratchet used 'No hope' on his.
I am keen to hear what Ratchet thinks about this. After all, this is a thread to talk about billboard modifications, isn't it?

Inventory2 said...

Once again you put your twist on a thread Robert. Oddly, people find it tiresome.

robertguyton said...

'twist on a thread' - very good, Inv2 - you should be doing the billboard modifications.

Inventory2 said...

Totally unintentional, I can assure you Robert. And I'll leave the photoshopping to those with better computer skills than mine.
