OK; the stranding of the Rena on the Astrolabe Reef off Tauranga is not good at all, and we can only keep our fingers crossed that salvage experts can work their magic with the minimum of impact on the marine environment.
But as for the statement on the billboard; d'you think that whatever investigations take place might just come to the same conclusion; after all; reefs don't move, do they?

It seem the ship has a bit of "form" in regards to dodgy navigation:

Does someone not know how to program the GPS?
Did she have a local pilot in command?
20km offshore Adolf; I'm not sure.
I think Gareth Hughes is going to bust a nut over this....demanding Govt take control!!!
Normal pilot boarding here. About 2.5NM from A Bouy, about 5NM from the Mount.
Cheers for that PM
I have had an interesting day on this subject. I do not pull punches and while I will not go further than the information that is public, that is an ethical consideration we face a large problem

Adolf she was about 7 Km from the pilot the real questin is did she have a bridge crew ie. was the old man on board.
The comment was made to me that the navigator might have drawn a line on the chart from a waypoint north of white island direct to the pilot station at Port Tauranga.
The line on the chart could possibly have have crossed the reef without noticing it.
Bang!
It will be interesting to see what ITAC say.
Other things.
The Rena will be sitting on the reef for some time.
Moving it will take some considerable time, as will pumping out the bunkers and moving the cargo ashore.
Unless adverse weather causes it to break up.
So I do wish that idiots like Hughes would shut up and let the grown ups do their jobs.
Quintin I think you mean what TAIC say, but to be frank they probably will not say much and rember they do not apportion blame that is for other agencies and yup I think they just cut a corner as well( a bit ironic when you consider the name of the reef and when it was charted )
What is of interest is who was on the bridge. They were about half an hour from the pilot station I would expect the Skipper ( Old Man ) to be in actual command rather than a mate.
Rena will probably not leave the reef other than by physically breaking up. Getting the oil off is the real issue.
This is not a political statement but what the hell is HMSNZ Endevour doing ? along side in Wellington I gather.
We have the capability to deal with this just, but actually getting off our butts and doing it well we failed. Awanuia has be sent but I fear it is to little to late.
And this Government is encouraging deep sea oil drilling by foreign oil companies?
This situation is trifling by comparison with a Gulf of Mexico type rupture, and yet the response is unacceptably slow and ineffective. Assurances from National about the safety of off shore oil rigs and the risk to our environment is patent nonsense.
We don't have the capability to cope with a big disaster.
