There’s been plenty of coverage today of the polling showing
a gathering of support for NZ First, what that means for National, and whether
or not John Key is now forced to have a “cup
of tea” with John Banks. The nightmare scenario of a
Labour-Green-Mana-Winston coalition looms...
In the parallel universe of the Standard, the MSM are
apparently swinging in behind ACT to get John’n’Don into parliament and Chris
Trotter’s even got a conspiracy theory running, that TPTB are talking up the
Greens as a coalition partner of last resort to ensure another term for Key!
What the hell’s in the water where they live? The MSM have
been gunning to destroy ACT for the last two terms and it is at least a valid
question, to ask whether Key might again go where Labour daren’t and bring the
Greens into the tent, as he did with the Maori Party.
But I digress. My quandary is this: I’m socially liberal but
economically Right. Like Liberty Scott, I want to vote for the ACT Party
(as I have in the last three elections), but Don’s politically incompetent and
Banks, well let’s be nice, should have stayed in the National Party. One of the
things I dislike most about our political system, is that it seems the vast
majority of National voters are voting *against* Labour and vice versa. It’s
been a strong principle all my voting life always to vote for, not against.
So I’m stuck. Do I compromise that for-not-against principle
and vote ACT or stick with it and consign my vote to the “wasted” percentage
with Libertarianz?

I too have been an Act voter and National supporter in the past. Very disappointed in smile and wave. We had 10 years of wasted opportunity under Labour and then three with Labour Lite. Was toying with voting United for their outdoor policies but have now decided to vote for Winston. They all deserve one another, a pox on the lot of them.
I understand where you're coming from JS; Brash has been an absolute failure since ousting Hide. He seems to learned nothing politically since 2005.
And this year, there's not even the Bill and Ben Party as a fallback option...
Funny the left are screaming about the Lame Stream Media when it is the LSM that has given Winston First the oxygen to come back!
As for voting - a vote for Act is a vote for the policy prescription a National coalition would put together. A vote for Winston First is a vote for chaos and mayhem - or in other words whatever policy Winston feels like when he gets out of bed that morning.
If Key has his cuppa with Banks then it will mean Act will get at least three and maybe up to five MP's. Three of those MP's that would form the caucus majority match your fiscally right / socially liberal outlook.
Having said all that I still haven't decided myself who (or even if) I am going to vote for.

I am voting for ACT again on the basis that this is it. they screw up even half as much as this term and i am done.
why? well i beleive that once you get past banks, if ACT do what they say they do, they are the only credible Socially Liberal/free market party out there (who has a chance of seats, sorry Libz).
If we keep MMP and ACT goes, then any chance at freemarket policies goes dead. we will one day then have a green PM, and sod that.
Brash might be politically imcompetent, but he is intellectually head and shoulders over almost all the people in parliament. and for that i am prepared (one last time) to swallow the dead rat of voting act and allowing banks back to parliament.
Take a long shower and a wire brush with you after voting Allan. Better to abstain and maintain your dignity. Banks is a SHOCKER.
@Alan. I think there's definitely 5% of the vote for the party ACT *should* be, I just think that long term it might be better that ACT dies and something new replaces it.
Who knows, if that were to happen, I might break another lifetime habit and actually join a political party.

James, I would say there are a lot of people in the same boat as you. I believe that if anyone wants to really shape NZ into a fair prosperous nation again, they're going to have to join a political party of choice and make sure their elected representatives do what their grassroot support wants them to. Our country has too far gone to the dogs to trust any politician to keep to the basics of doing the best for the country and its citizens. I'll swallow the rat of voting Act, but if they get back into Parliament, I will be on their doorstep to sign as a member to make sure my voice is heard for the next three years.

The problem is: ACT's only hope is Banks. I cannot discern a single attribute of his that resembles ACT's founding principles. Brash, despite being managed by Linz Perigo is an albatross. I am a traditional supporter of Libz but think this time, despite their foibles I'll party vote Libz but vote for the local National candidate as I know her.If all National can do is serve up a further 3 years of Labour lite then I am off up the jungle....

Oh for sure, I've never made a decision I'd hide away from...it's one of the reasons I'd be completely unelectable myself.
My electorate vote will be going to Sam Lotu-Iiga, even for a non-National supporter, there's Usain Bolt level daylight to any other candidate.
Key reportedly confirmed after his meeting with Banks that he would be voting for the National candidate in Epsom.
So Tories are supposed to do as I say not as I do.

It's utter appalling that National voters in Epsom have to suck on the sour taste of Banks just because their shyster of a leader gives them the wink. My skin would be creeping if I was one of those puppet voters.

As to where it went wrong for ACT? I just don't think they've had real leadership material in their ranks since Prebble - Rodney was a highly effective parliamentarian, but not IMO a leader; Brash is great on the finance but hopeless elsewhere.
And now Key has to clasp Banks to his chest it is truly sickening to watch. The whole charade perfectly describes the Key government and National's sycophants who must now pretend that everything is okay, that their leader is not a smarmy sell-out and that he isn't propping up a deeply diseased ACT party for his own benefit, causing Nat supporters like I2 to become hypocrites and sell-outs themselves. I sympathise with you James for having to swallow this sickening pretence, all for the sake of power. I hope the people of Epsom tell Key and Banks to shove it.

I figure it is a no brainer. ACT must not be allowed to fail. It's what the left and the MSM want. So its electorate vote Craig Foss and party vote ACT for me, just like last time.
ACT must be given a chance to rebuild.

I'm an Epsom voter who intends to vote for John Banks. Serious question: what's all this anti-Banks rhetoric about? Seems to be coming from righties as much as lefties, and I can't figure out why. As for my party vote, I'm still undecided; it would have been Act till Don Brash's brain imploded, now not sure.
