We got a lovely phone call during the week; an invitation from friends to join them at tonight's Wanganui Business Awards dinner. Our friends have entered for the first time, and it will be a pleasure to go along and support them. So we'll be dressing up in all our finery, and hob-nobbing it with the River City's movers and shakers. We'll let you know tomorrow who the winners were on the night, but in their own way, all the entrants are winners.
Wanganui has some great and innovative businesses, and tonight's dinner is all about celebrating success. Last year Q-West Boatbuilders were deservedly the winners of the Supreme Award; they craft a range of marine vessels for both the domestic and export markets at their boatyard on the banks of the lower Whanganui River.
We may even enter the awards ourselves next year; time got away from us this year, and the entry process is pretty rigorous. But cities like Wanganui need successful and growing businesses to drive growth in employment, and they need a government which is friendly towards small and medium business. Our business has grown by well over 100% since the 2008 election despite unfavourable economic conditions; we've certainly found that doing business has been easier with the current government than its predecessor.
We're thoroughly looking forward to this evening, and we wish all the entrants a most successful and rewarding night. If we're a bit slow off the mark tomorrow morning, you'll know that we enjoyed ourselves!
