Bye bye Carmel

Breaking news from the Herald:

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett has reclaimed the Waitakere seat from Labour's Carmel Sepuloni by nine votes in a judicial recount.

Official confirmation is expected later today.

Ms Bennett was named the winner of the electorate on election night after the results gave her a 45-vote lead over Ms Sepuloni.

However, the National MP lost the seat in last Saturday's special vote count, which gave Ms Sepuloni an even tighter margin of 11 votes.

Ms Bennett applied for a judicial recount.

The result is particularly disappointing for Ms Sepuloni, who loses her place in Parliament altogether because her ranking is too low for her to come in on Labour's list.

Carmel Sepuloni's misfortune is Raymond Huo's good fortune. He's been in, then out, and now he's back in again. In the meantime, Carmel Sepuloni will have to wait until 2014, or until a list-only member resigns when she might have a chance to get back in.

We got wind of this possibility yesterday, but have kept to to ourselves out of respect to our source. We understand that some special votes were declared invalid, tipping the scales in Ms Bennet's favour again.

Well done Paula Bennett, MP for Waitakere.

Another Nelson Muntz moment.

Wonder what difference the Septic / Huo swap might have made to the leadership numbers...

Na shes not next on the list, two more in front of her.

James: Carmel has openly said she was a Cunliffe supporter so probs wouldnt have changed the result.
