An Arse of a season

Regular readers will know that we are longstanding fans of English Premier League football side Arsenal. We've follwed the Gunners slavishly since around 1970.

This season has been a tough one to be an Arsenal supporter. But that's fine because we also support the New Zealand cricket teams and the Hurricanes in Super 15 rugby, and we know what it's like to go through tough times, whilst staying true to the team.

But this morning's effort at San Siro against AC Milan was the pits. A four-nil defeat will almost certainly see the Gunners eliminated from the Champion's League; no side has ever recovered from a four-goal first leg deficit in Champion's League history. And with Arsenal currently just inside the top four in the Premiership, there's no guarantee of Champions' League football next season either.

Manager Arsene Wenger has lashed out at his team after the match, decsribing their performance as "shocking", and we heartily agree with him. But we wonder if the time is fast coming when Arsenal must initiate change at the very top.

Wenger has now been at the club since 1998, and Arsenal has enjoyed considerable success under his stewardship. Alas though, little of that success has come in the last couple of seasons, and Arsenal's performances this season have been patchy at best, with too many losses to inferior opponents.

It's often said that there are only two kinds of football coaches; those who have been sacked, and those who are about to be sacked. We wonder that, if Arsenal is to again be a force in English and European football, that Arsene Wenger should move from the latter category to the former.

As a loyal Spurs supporter I fell sorry for you guys. NOT

In contrast the Arsenal's season Spurs have just been brilliant. Their usual mid season slump has yet to come. Hopefully we will be in the Champions League next year
