Back to the bear-pit

Parliament resumes at 2pm today, after the summer hiatus. With this being the first full sitting of the 50th Parliament, there is plenty to be interested in.

The Address in Reply Debate will continue. It is in this debate that new MP's make their maiden speeces, and it's always interesting to see what the electorate served up back in November. It's a time of considerable significance for all those entering Parliament for the first time, and where possible, we will keep a watching brief on the debate and comment on the highlights.

Question Time will also be interesting; the first head-to-head between the Prime Minister and the new Leader of the Opposition. There has been much speculation over how David Shearer and his "new-look" front bench will perform against their National opponents; we are about to see if they can front up.

But it is also at Question Time where the impact of Labour's 60-year low polling will be felt. Oral questions and supplementaries are allocated on the basis of representation, and with Labour's vote having been cannibalised by the Greens and NZ First, Shearer's team will have less of each. They will have to make what questions they do have count.

And then there's the Winston Factor; Parliament will doubtless be more entertaining with the sly old fox back, and Lockwood Smith will be kept on his toes.

It all starts at 2pm this afternoon; bring it on!
