Celebrity or criminal

We blogged about a jury earlier in this morning, so let's take that analogy a bit further; check this out:

Actress Lucy Lawless and other Greenpeace protesters are scaling a ship in the Port of Taranaki to protest drilling oil in the Arctic.

Greenpeace said around 7am the protesters began climbing a 53 metre drilling derrick on the ship, Nobel Discoverer.

They are in the process of hanging anti-oil drilling banners reading "Stop Shell" and "#SaveTheArctic" on the ship.

According to Greenpeace the ship is heading to the Arctic Circle to drill for oil for Shell off the coast of Alaska.

It said the Noble Discoverer is due to depart on a 6,000 nautical mile journey to drill three exploratory oil wells in the Chukchi Sea off the coast of Alaska.

Lawless, famous for her role in Xena, and the other Greenpeace protesters are equipped with survival gear and enough supplies to last for several days.

"Deep-sea oil drilling is bad enough, but venturing into the Arctic, one of the most magical places on the planet, is going too far, Lawless said.

"I don't want my kids to grow up in a world without these extraordinary places intact or where we ruin the habitat of polar bears for the last drops of oil."

Now leaving apart the fact that New Zealand is a helluva long way off the normal route to the Arctic, and leaving apart our scepticism into this kind ofr celebrity activism, what does the Blogosphere Jury reckon; is Ms Lawless a misguided celebrity, or a common criminal? Is she really Lawless by name, and lawless by nature? And how much of the world's allegedly dwindling oil reserves did Lucy Lawless chew up getting from wherever she bases herself now to New Plymouth?

The jury is out...

I suppose it's too much to hope the ship sails with the nutters on board and the crew invites the nutters to walk home, at gun point if necessary, as soon as they exit the 12 mile limit.

Tinman, that would be my ideal scenario as well but that won't happen.

She and her mates should be charged with breaches of the Maritime Security Act 2004, as all pport facilities are governed by that act. Trespass also springs to mind, and then there is civil liability for the port being forced to suspend opperations while the police haggle with her and her mates.

The ship owners could also sue her for losses which may be in the vicinity of USD$5,000 - $10,000 per day.

Lucy'd bust your arse if you said that to her face, Tinny Man. Yours too, Keeping Stock. She's got more courage in her little finger than the both of you well-padded fellows combined.

Tinman - once they get round to it after investigating the Electoral Commission complaints the Police will probably save their worthless hides.

Criminal Trespass ans wasting Police time are two obvious charges.

Real Courage. Yeah Right. It's not like she's in a war zone for God's sake. She's effectively climbed a tree,
