As we type this, Julia Gillard is still answering questions from reporters at a media conference. But she has laid down the gauntlet to Kevin Rudd, and the ALP leadership is up for grabs at 10am Monday (Australia time).
Ms Gillard has defended her record as Prime Minister during her speech to the media pack. But in answering questions, she has savaged Rudd, describing him as an outstanding campaigner but a disorganised and chaotic Prime Minister. She wants the ALP leadership sorted out "once and for all", a phrase liberally used during her speech.
The gloves are well and truly off, and the blood-letting has begun. Ms Gillard has pledged if defeated to retire to the back bench, and drop any future leadership ambitions. And she has challenged Rudd to do likewise, whilst twisting the knife at every opportunity, This is going to get nasty, because it's personal.
And at the same time, Kevin Rudd has confirmed Australia's worst-kept secret; that he will be a candidate for the leadership on Monday. And on top of that, he reckons he has the numbers.
Bring it on.

MORE than 13 million Australians failed to decide on a prime minister at the last election - but now the future of the country is set to rest in the hands of 103 people in a small room in Canberra.
And they all vote Labor.
