Sports broadcaster Phillip Leishman underwent brain surgery yesterday morning in Auckland after a tumour was found last week.
The television veteran is understood to have found out last Friday that he would need an operation.
Close family friend Leanne McGoldrick said the operation was to remove the tumour but treatment would be ongoing. She said the family had asked for privacy.
"He has come through the surgery well.
We've just seen today that Phillip Leishman has been broadcasting since 1970; a career of more than 40 years. That explains why he seems like such a fixture of sports broadcasting. In recent years, his focus has been on golf, where he has taken viewers to some of the greatest courses and tournaments on the globe. His affable, laid-back style is ideal for golf, and we've thoroughly enjoyed the way in which he's whetted our appetite to visit courses in some far-flung places.
We hope that Leishman's surgery has been a success, and that the tumour has been able to be removed without complication. Our thoughts, our prayers and our aroha are with Phillip, his family and his friends.
