The 2014 campaign is underway; and guess who's paying?

Even though it's less than seven months since New Zealand went to the polls, it seems that the 2014 campaign is underway in earnest.

Pete George was a United Future candidate in last November's election. We don't know if he's planning to stand again; all power to him if he does. But he's blogged what follows this morning; under the heading Green abuse of CIR could be more insidious he opines:

The Green party has been criticised for spending tens of thousands of dollars collecting petition signatures.
Greens know the referendum will be too late.
They now it will probably be ignored (as they have done in the past).
Why are they spending so much?

Are they investing in something bigger? Like planning on using $millions of taxpayers dollars on their 2014 election campaign?

Pete George makes a very good point here. The Greens must realise that a petition and a CIR on the subject of asset sales will not make a blind bit of difference as to whether the partial sell-down of Mighty River Power and other energy SOE's happens.

But if there's one thing that the Greens do well, it's campaigning and scare-mongering. That's hardly surprising; just look at the history of activism of most of their MP's, both current and former. That their campaigns are often hyperbolic matters not a jot to them; the cause is what matters, and the truth is just an inconvenience.

So Pete argues that the CIR petition is really just another campaign for the Greens; the start of the 2014 election campaign. And his view is confirmed by one who is not unknown in Green Party circles at at this blog; read on:

So what is their intent here? One possibility is that it gives them a means of continuing a lost election campaign, funded by the taxpayer. But what is the real purpose of a seemingly futile referendum?
Comments on previous posts here suggests a longer game:

The Greens are managing these issues perfectly. You can’t catch them. They’ve learned alright! You won’t ping them on the referendum support either. The public will regard you as sniping if you try to portray the Greens as they see National, Labour, NZFirst, Act and UnitedFuture. Go for it though, Pete!

The referendum will reflect the country’s real feelings and will come at a time when it counts – just prior to the election. Perfect. Bye bye Mr Dunne. Bye Mr Key. Sayonara.
Wasting tens of thousands of dollars of  parliamentary resources in hijacking Referenda from Citizens is bad enough.

Well; fancy that. One of the Greens' own seems to have dobbed them in! Isn't that ironic?

But we reckon that Pete George is right on the money here. The Greens' support of the CIR petition is far more about politics and positioning than it is about the actual issue of asset sales, especially when they are colluding with the party that sold more state assets when in government between 1984 and 1990 than any other government prior or since.

And what's worse; whether directly or by more insidious means, the Greens are using their appropriation of taxpayer funds for political purposes, not for running expenses, research and the other  day to day expenses that parties in the Parliament incur. We don't think that's especially ethical. Fortunately however, the media are now sniffing around the Greens' little ruse, and their motives are likely to come under increased scrutiny. That's not a bad thing at all.

Perhaps the real campaign underway is from bloggers supportive of National trying to discredit any potential opposition before 2014. There isn't really any other way to explain such a hysterical post.

Play the ball Alex; not the blogger.

Hysterical?

Truthful more like Alex.

Final reading next week into law soon after.. referendum dead in the water, regardless.

Green liars have known this since the real referendum called a general election.

Unfortunatly a certain %age of NZ's are stupid enough to buy & believe it..after all thats how they get any votes at all, they come from the underthinkers, and underacheivers, of NZ. Much the same as that other party of entitilists the LP.

Our money pays for duplicious liars and charletens.

Quite so Lofty. I've just returned from lunch with my friend John, asnd outside the venue there was a small choir singing some anti-assets sales dirge. I was going to ask them why they weren't at work, but then thought that the answer would be pretty self-evident.

@ KS - Normally I would, you know that, but this is a case of a post full of incredible half truths. The money being spent on the petition has already been allocated to the Greens. They can literally do whatever they like. The fact that they have chosen to spend their leader's fund on a petition set up by an activist coalition of organisations speaks volumes. They would rather spend their leader's fund doing something worthwhile, rather than paying an army of spin doctors.

Anonymous said...

"Something worthwhile"????

How can something they already know is dead in the water be "worthwhile"? Come on Alex who is being naive now? - or are you just another spin doctor?

Paranormal

Lofty said...

Worthwhile
Worthbloodywhile???

Wasting my extremely hard earned and legally stolen cash..

pfffttt, you must be joking Alex,

I despair, at you lot I really do, give me strength.

@Anon 4.41- It clearly isn't dead in the water though. The petition will likely be finished before Mighty River Power goes up for sale, which is the first power company. The government clearly sees this as something that isn't dead in the water, as they put a backout clause into the bill.

P.S, no I'm not a spin doctor, just a bullshit detector.

@Lofty - All parties get given a leader's fund. Most spend it on PR and spin. The Greens are spending theirs on a petition. If you want to look at wasted taxpayer money, look at how other parties use their leader's funds.

What are the "half truths"?

The money being spent on the petition has already been allocated to the Greens. They can literally do whatever they like.

They can't do what they like with it at all. Expert opinion (Graeme Edgeler) is that it is technicaly within the rules but a concerning use of these funds.

They would rather spend their leader's fund doing something worthwhile

Whether trying to stop the MOM programme is "worthwhile" is debatable - how many genuinely think the petition will stop the sales proceeding?

Pete George said...

Electoral law expert Graeme Edgeler said that while the Greens' strategy was allowed, he did not feel it was appropriate.

"The reason that we give parliamentary parties money is so that they can keep us informed of what they're doing so that they can effectively do their jobs in Parliament.

"Using the money as a direct funding of people to go out and get signatures is a step more than any other party has done to date, and that might be a little concerning if it is seen to be appropriate."

When political parties' spending was reviewed in 2010, Mr Edgeler asked for use of Leader's Office money on gaining support for a referendum to be banned.

"If you're not allowed to tell people to vote a certain way in a citizens-initiated referendum, why can you spend money telling them to sign their name on a petition to get a referendum? It seems an odd distinction."

You're wasting your time deluging Alex with facts Pete; he only wants to read hysteria!

Judge Holden said...

So the Greens actions were totally legitimate. That's what Pete's saying. Only anti-democratic government shills have a problem here. They need something positive to crow about. Look, Tolley cwushed a car!

Lofty said...

Why am I not surprised Judge, at your cavalier attitude towards the frivolous and wastrel spending of the true workers in this country stolen money?

Who cares that it is morally indefensible, and worthless waste.

The gweens need a shill, and on cue here you are.

I despair of you and yours I really do. You and yours offer nothing constructive to this country, repeat apologists and entitlists. Fire enough lies and poohs a bit always sticks eh Judge?

Judge Holden said...

Poor wee lofty, all red-faced with faux righteous indignation. Perfectly legal and legitimate use of appropriated funds is not morally indefensible. What is is selling off assets cheap to your rich mates to pay for tax cuts for your rich mates. Stop blubbing and buy some shares. There's cash to be made, IV2 says so.

Lofty said...

Oh have absolutely no doubt Judge, my wife and I will be in as much as we can,

We work hard have the spare cash while still allowed to do so, so the partial float cannot come soon enough for us, retirement beckons in a few years and I don't want to have to live like those losers who have not got a bit rich during the baby boomers good times.

Poor wee Lofty eh.?

It is actually Rich big lofty boardering on wealthy, Judge,

My face is quite pale this evening thanks, but do fire a little more poohs my way if it makes you feel better Judge.

Judge Holden said...

"It is actually Rich big lofty boardering (sic) on wealthy..."

Poor wee man. Sooner or later you losers always have to try and boast about how rich you think you are. So insecure. And nice of you to admit that you support privatisation because you see it as a way to enrich yourself at the expense of the taxpayer. Cute.

Judge Holden said...

"but do fire a little more poohs my way..."

It's weird that you all have this scatological thing going too. What's up with that, wee guy?

Poor old Judge,

what a twisted and bitter life you must lead.

My thoughts go out to you old chap.

My kindest wishes.

Who would be a great PM and Min of Finance .. then add another 5 people who would lead NZ to greatness in another 5 front bench positions.
This is a thread you could start your blog up with.

The Greens have to be looked at closely!
When will the media wake up?
When will the people of New Zealand recognise the Green threat?

Keeping stock ...the price of democracy isn't cheap which as a taxpayer I am happy to pay ...I gather by your whining about the cost of the referendum you would prefer we had a governance like Egypt Syria, to mention just a few ..or we could have a blatantly corrupt election system like US ( a country totally controlled by the corporates and rich invested interests ie the Jewish lobby )

PS I am not and have never been a member of the green party ..actually for the first time I voted labour last election as I felt they had the most credible leader and I believed any party that would so willingly sell our State assets ( which my and other forebears worked so hard to give us) are traitors to this country!!

Keeping Stock said...

Did you notice that we had an election last year, and that the National Party is doing exactly what they said they would a full ten months before the election? You may not like that decision, but as soon as John key was able to form a government, he had the mandate to implement National's agenda.

The broccoli was your saving grace, Loft; the making of you, saved your bacon. Without it, you'd have remained a gibbering idiot, lolloping about the place like a love-sick calf. I accept your unspoken thanks, with the same sincere humbleness I'm known for throughout the land.ps - it's good to hear your voice again and know that the operation must have been successful. You and I know the first attempt to separate 'you' was a disaster (I can still hear the screams) but modern medicine, eh! I told you not to fear the medical people so! Sleep well tonight, Loft, bro, medical marvel.
