Another day; another protest

Students demonstrated at Victoria University today against education cuts and called for a national student movement in the wake of the violent arrest of 43 student protesters in Auckland last week.
Surrounded by five security guards but no police, about 100 Massey and Victoria university students gathered at the Kelburn campus at the Blockade the Budget demonstration.
Speakers also spoke in solidarity with Auckland University students, who organisers say were brutalised by police, after 43 Blockade the Budget protesters were arrested during a violent clash on Queen Street last week.
Victoria University history student Sam Oldham spoke to the crowd, calling for students across the country to mobilise behind the Auckland protestors against ''drastic cutbacks across the education sector.''
''We should not be afraid to blockade,'' Mr Oldham said.
He said Victoria University was ''notoriously repressive'' towards student radicals and said staff were ''living in a climate of fear.''
Students spoke about their experiences as tertiary students, struggles in education, and the work and job fears involved in studying at modern universities.

"About 100" might be on the generous side; there certainly weren't thousands turned away; check this out:

Just as the protesters at Auckland University last week were spread pretty thinly, there doesn't seem to be overwhelming support for the Blockade movement in Wellington, especially given that today's protest represented students from both Victoria and Massey Universities. Are most students unconcerned by the government's budget decisions with regard to sudent loans and allowances, or are they simply apathetic?

Hate youth, huh old man? No surprise.

Keeping Stock said...

"Hate" is such a strong word Pliny. And in fact I don't even dislike youth!

Nigel Ng said...

@Pliny I thought you are from the "loving and caring" side of society, thus, hatred words should not be in your vocabulary :)

Pliny the Empathetic said...

Indeed, Nigel. I intensely dislike youth being maligned for being young. Mr Stock is doing just that.
I suspect, youth-envy.
Are there words inadmissible to anyone at all?
How perplexing (can I use that word, Mr Ng?).

Keeping Stock said...

Youth-envy? Only as far as I wish I was young again.

And for the record, I'm not maligning youth for being young; all I've done is comment on the apparent apathy towards what some students have said is a burning issue. Perhaps they were all away having that free lunch that "Joe" on Close Up the other night reckoned students were all entitled to.

I proudly spotted my son in your photo, KP, no apathy in our family!

Keeping Stock is mocking the efforts of your son, sprout. He doesn't respect protest, protesters or youth.

Pliny the Observant should go on a blind date with Vlad the Impaler.

The world would be a better place.

I can count no more than 34 people in that picture.

Sprout's more than capable of judging my intent for himself Liny. And full marks to his son for NOT being apathetic, even if I disagree with his views.

Pliny, I didn't detect such strong sentiments against protests or youth in KPs post. Obviously I can't speak for him but I would think he would respect those who are prepared to stand up for what they believe (in a lawful fashion) even if he doesn't agree with their views.

@ Sprout; snap!

You're new here, bsprout. Our host loathes and denigrates protesters. Ask him about Zena.
Ask him about the Occupy people.
Ask him. Go on.

Yes, Pliny, and suggest to bsprout that he ask our host about the protesters in the photo in the NZ Herald today, the one accompanying the article by John Roughan entitled "This is victory with vengeance".
