UPDATE: Not good news for patrons of the Backbencher; the kitchen of the pub has sustained significant damage, as has Peter Dunne:
Far from being bland, and suitable for everyone's palate, the Member for Ohariu seems to have been smoked and char-grilled. Quite how he'll get the smoke out of is hair is anyone's guess!
On a serious note though, our thoughts are with the owners, management and staff of our favourite Wellington pub. We hope that the other puppets and all the memorabilia that adorns the two bars has largely escaped the flames, and that the Backbencher is up and running soon.
We've just seen on Twitter that Wellington's iconic Backbencher pub is on fire; stand by for updates.

The Backbencher is a significant part of the Wellington political landscape, and we've often eaten or watered there before big games at Westpac Stadium; here's hoping that it's just something minor.

I have just seen a post that it will be closed for 4 weeks. Damage must not be too significant, although some great memorabelia may be damaged I suppose.
