Unredeemable by my standards, I leave the forgiveness of those types to God.
Thankfully, James, there are many who have suffered the consequences of devastating injustices who have managed to move on so that the next generations aren't blighted with the same hatred. Also for every horrendous act by an individual there is often a background of neglect and abuse. Most perpetrators are victims themselves and while that never can excuse the behaviour, it is up to all of us to ensure that the cycle of violence and hatred is stopped.

We are not all blessed with the same propensity for intellectual discourse as you are bsprout. This is an emotional issue for many, and that is reflected in the responses.
However the atrocities in Northern Ireland were not a result of neglect and abuse; they were the byproduct of generations of sectarian hatred and ingrained biogtry. Let's be glad that the leaders have found the strength to move on, and consign The Troubles to history.
