Those of us who class ourselves as Cycling Fans do get sick and tired of defending the sport against the knockers who bang on about drugs and cheating, but can you imagine what it’s like to be a top rider? Bradley Wiggins has helpfully provided an insight at the Stage 8 press conference.
Asked about the whispering campaign about his “sudden” success, he delivered this serve to all of us armchair critics:
“I say they’re just fucking wankers. I cannot be doing with people like that. It justifies their own bone-idleness because they can’t ever imagine applying themselves to do anything in their lives. It’s easy for them to sit under a pseudonym on Twitter and write that sort of shit, rather than get off their arses in their own lives and apply themselves and work hard at something and achieve something. And that’s ultimately it. Cunts!”
Well said Brad, is it any wonder that football and tennis run such shoddy drug-testing programmes, when cycling and athletics show what happens when you actually start catching people?
It's a timely reminder as Lance Armstrong fights charges, based on not much more than a similar anti non-continental European smear campaign and the word of confessed and convicted cheats, that's it's sometimes a bit too easy to assume the worst in people.
