Emmerson on espionage

The news broke yesterday about a Canadian naval officer being accused of selling New Zealand's secrets to Russia. It's certainly an unusual accusation in these post-Cold War days.

But Rod Emmerson manages to see the humour in the situation:

This is another cracking good cartoon from our favourite cartoonist. We hope that he sends a signed original to Willie Apiata VC!

This cartoon, I acknowledge, is pretty good. Particularly well drawn as well. But I personally don't rate Emmerson highly as a cartoonist. Too much of his fare is "strained" or "forced" humour, lacking subtlety or true wit. Often he requires much verbiage (or even direct labelling for identification purposes) to reinforce the humourous connection that he is attempting to imply.

Is Emmerson a New Zealander? At times he appears to have a non-NZ psyche that is a bit of a worry for somebody trying to hit our funny bone.

But, hey, we can't all have the same views or tastes. And I would certainly welcome more cartoons from Emmerson of today's standard.
