He's in the news again

Wellington's serial protester and soon-to-be vexacious litigant is in the news again; the Dom-Post reports:

Serial protester Benjamin Easton has been accused of bowling a pedestrian while performing a motorbike protest the wrong way through the very bus lanes he tried to stop.

A 33-year-old Wellington man said he was crossing the Manners St bus lane during the Monday night rush hour. He walked through a gap between stopped buses, entering the east-bound lane, and looked to the left for oncoming buses driving towards Courtenay Pl.

However, he did not look to the right, where he claims Mr Easton had crossed double yellow lines and was passing the parked buses on the wrong side of the road.

It's all a big misunderstanding though, as Mr Easton was simply asserting his rights (removes tongue from cheek!); read on:

Mr Easton admitted to The Dominion Post that he was riding down the bus lane and "connected" with the man, but said he had a right to be there because he was protesting.

 Now the right to protest is one thing. But even those exercising that right must do so within the law, and without compromising the safety of law-abiding citizens just going about their daily business. And the question needs to be asked; how can someone who refuses to work, and who has already has their benefit stopped because they refused to work afford a motorcycle and the fuel to run it?

Easton will doubtless represent himself in Court if prosecuted, as he does with his civil litigation, always with the same result. We doubt however that he will receive the same latitude as he has in civil jurisdiction, and he may well have cause to reflect on the old phrase that a man who represents himself has a fool for a client.
