Who ate all the pies?

It's that time of year when those of us who love the taste of pastry with either a sweet or savoury filling start to salivate; Newstalk ZB reports:

The country's pie makers have been advised to lift their game, ahead of today's judging in the Bakels Supreme Pie Awards.
More than 4500 of the savoury treats will be put to the test for taste, construction, and aesthetics.
One of the judges for the awards, Duncan Loney, says the standard and quality over the years has really ramped up.
"The whole game has lifted and the average pie that we get in here today is now a fine looking specimen I must say, and there's been a lot more attention put into flavours, pastry layering, making sure it's well baked through the base."
The winner of the coveted Supreme Pie-maker Trophy will be announced in Auckland on Tuesday.

There's a bakery not too far from our place of work that has placed in the top ten nationwide on several occasions, and their pies are delicious. However, given that we've been on a bit of a health kick this year, pies have generally been on the prohibited substances list; generally!

Nonetheless, we wish all those bakers who have entered this year's awards every success today. The mere fact that these awards exist is a sure sign that there's still an appetite for the humble pie. And we guess that the humble refrain "Who ate all the pies?" will be with us for a while to come.

Bon appetite!

My boss is up there. A past Supreme Pie Winner he spent hours on Monday, Tuesday and yesterday morning perfectng his entries.

I told him this years judges were Gerry Brownlie, Parekura Horomia and Piri Weepu but it didn't deter him.
