Goodbye Bluey

We suggested on Friday that Brian "Bluey" McClennan's reign as Head Coach of the hapless Vodafone Warriors might be poised to end. We were right; check this out, from the club's website:

The Vodafone Warriors and head coach Brian McClennan have mutually agreed for him to leave the club with assistant coach Tony Iro taking over for the last two matches of the 2012 NRL season.
While McClennan was contracted until the end of the 2013 season, Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah said both parties had agreed on an early release in the best interests of the club.
He said Iro would take over the coaching role on an interim basis from today to prepare the Vodafone Warriors for their final regular season matches against St George Illawarra on Saturday night (August 25) and Canberra on Sunday, September 2.

The Warriors have had a shocker of a season, and with six consecutive defeats they are now staring down the barrel of the dreaded wooden spoon.

The usual platitudes are being exchanged:

McClennan, appointed Vodafone Warriors head coach last August, was ‘very disappointed’ his tenure hadn’t produced the results he expected.
“It was exciting coming into this job with the Vodafone Warriors and everyone has worked so hard to try to get the performances and results we all expected of ourselves,” he said.
“No one is more disappointed than me that things haven’t worked out. I gave it my best shot. I’ve put my heart and soul into this and everyone has been terrific with their efforts.
“I’ve always said I was driving the bus and I accept accountability. It stops with me.
“For whatever reason, we haven’t made the progress we all hoped for.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity the Vodafone Warriors gave me and wish the club all the best for the future.”
Scurrah said:“We know how disappointed Brian is and we’re equally disappointed for him and for everyone who is associated with the Vodafone Warriors.
“Brian is a person of wonderful character and integrity, he’s so passionate about rugby league and he’s put in an exceptional amount of time and effort into trying to turn the team’s fortunes around.
“He brought a lot of energy to the club and made a fantastic contribution off the field with his interaction with sponsors, members and in the community.
“We wish Brian and his family all the best for the future and thank him for his efforts.”
Scurrah said the club now had the opportunity to rebuild.

We certainly hope that the Warriors can rebuild, and the smart money will be on them rebuilding under Stephen Kearney. After going all the way to the Grand Final last year there were high hopes that the Warriors could finally go all the way in 2012, but they have been dashed by a series of well below-par performances.

Ah well; there's always 2013. And in the meantime, there's always the Black Caps to follow for those of us who like life to be made difficult for ourselves!

Even "shocker" is perhaps too mild a term

Six weeks ago there was hope Robert. We were in or about the eight. Then came the snatching-defeat-from-the-jaws-of-victory double act against Newcastle and Manly, and it's been all downhill since.

Ah well; there's always the Black Caps...

Bluey has had a 'mare.
That is certain.
And there was an air of inevitablity about his departure.
I am not certain that Kevin Iro will escape the train wreck that is the warriors intact either.
Having said that all else fades into insignificance with the sart of the EPL season. Everton magnificent this morning beating MU 1-0 and of course my beloved West Ham beating Aston Villa 1-0 too.

when it comes to results like this, the players usually get off scott free and the coach gets it .. the team sucks at the moment BUT capable of destroying opposition on their day, too few such days this year.
re Man U losing, bugger

@ QH and Jabba - yes; delighted with RVP's Man U debut. May there be many more such results this season!

To me, McClennan's credentials as a coach dropped when he made Manu Vatuvei captain. Vatuvei is a terrific player, but like many Polynesian players, he's quietly spoken and reserved, and not the kind to gee the players up. And yes; the team sucks, but the buck stops with the coach who can always drop non-performing players. I'd say that he'd lost the dressing room.

Hey, yeah, where's your post on Van Persie?

More seriously, Owen Glenn should wave his chequebook under the nose of Tony Smith and see if he can entice him away from Warington.
